Bucks Burnett to exhibit eight-track tape collection at Barry Whistler October 29-31

3

On Friday, October 30, Barry Whistler Gallery will host the world's first eight track gallery exhibit, EIGHT TRACK TAPES, an extensive collection of rare and unusual eight track tapes assembled over a 20-year period by Dallas record store owner (Earotica Music within Dolly Python) and music producer (Tiny Tim, Rachel Bazooka) Bucks Burnett.

Burnett is launching the exhibit to begin funding and awareness for his Eight Track Museum, to open in 2010. The exhibit will present the public debut of three main bodies from the private collection of Bucks Burnett:

* The Rutles - 500 sealed eight tracks with shipping cartons

* The Beatles - 3 pack eight-track box set

* Elvis Presley - 30 identical sealed eight tracks with RCA shipping carton

Also included will be the complete eight track tape discographies of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Grand Funk. Also presented are rare and signed eight tracks, including a Led Zeppelin eight track signed by the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin.

"I hope to present these eight tracks, for the first time, as historical pop culture artifacts," says Burnett. 'The eight track existed as a viable music format for 24 years (1965-1989), and deserves a worthy representation."

Barry Whistler Gallery is one of Dallas' leading contemporary art galleries, and Whistler will debut his new band The BBC at the event. "This exhibit marks the second collaborative effort with Mr. Burnett," explains Whistler, "and I appreciate the opportunity to share this moment of pop culture history with a wider audience." Burnett curated an exhibit of The Beatles White Album for the gallery in 2003.

The exhibit will be filmed in HiDef for inclusion in Burnett's 17-year-old film project documenting the eight-track format, Spinal Tape.

The event opening is October 30, 7-9 p.m., and Burnett will host a Gallery Talk and Guided Tour of the exhibit on October 31 at 2 p.m. The exhibit runs from Thursday October 29 through Saturday October 31.

I had an 8-Track player in my 1980 Camaro, complete with the original 8-Track GM Sampler that came with the car when it was first sold. I'm sure that the kid I sold the car to ripped it out and put in some new CD/MP3 Stereo with a redundant remote control. :-)
