Dallas-based Greyhound Lines thinks you might like to take buses rather than planes over the holiday

Holiday travelers this year will be greeted at the airport with record-high fares, new fees and surcharges, and the usual frustrations of cancelled flights. As families look to save money while keeping their cherished holiday traditions, Greyhound is committed to making travel simple and cost effective this season.

"Major airline carriers are increasing their prices and implementing higher fees this year," said Dave Leach, president and CEO, Greyhound Lines, Inc. "Greyhound is focused on convenience and value to help bring families together for the holidays."

Some of the charges awaiting travelers this holiday season include fees for blankets and pillows, extra charges to book your flight over the phone, and higher fares for picking your seat or enjoying extra legroom. Greyhound offers the flexibility to travel with extra luggage and the first bag is always free. Passengers also can board with wrapped holiday gifts and don't have to worry about being stuck in a middle seat, while enjoying extra room to stretch out.

The following special promotions are now available on Greyhound.com and in terminals:

-- Friends and Family Companion Fare: Save 50 percent on up-to-three companions when you purchase one adult ticket at the regular walk-up price at least three days in advance of travel. Offer good for both one-way and round-trip tickets.

-- Advance Purchase Fares: Save as much as 50 percent off tickets purchased 21 days in advance; as much as 25 percent off the regular ticket price if purchased at least 14 days in advance; and 10 percent or more when purchasing 7 days in advance.

-- Expanded Online Discounts: Fares are priced at a 20 percent discount off the adult standard walk-up fare.

-- Priority Boarding: For the cost of a cup of gourmet coffee, riders can guarantee they will board the bus first.
