Dan's is widely acknowledged to have one of the best sound systems in Denton; as such, bands clamor for a chance to play the legendary stage. This week, house show circuit staple Spooky Folk will play the Silverleaf for the first time. The audiophiles behind the board will have a busy night of balancing the raw acoustics and heavy vocals reminiscent of giddy children singing at the top of their lungs. (It will certainly beat the tinny echoes inherent to living room stages.) More enthusiastic than they are spooky, Kaleo and company will join Matthew Gray and Jenn Gooch for an evening of haunting folk. This show will be worth going to if for nothing more than to watch Spooky Folk kick up a great time on stage -- they always look like they're having the best time when they play. I think they'll feel right at home on the Silverleaf stage.
Friday
Proof positive that Oak Cliff breeds cool kids: 12-year-old DJ duo The Goldfish Girls will be at their usual Friday night post, spinning classic '80s soul and funk at Absinthe Lounge at Southside on Lamar. You can always trust your ears to girls who listens to Bootsy Collins and Prince -- especially if their record collection is older than they are: The girls only spin on vinyl.

One of my first favorite Dallas bands, Smile Smile, takes to the House of Blues stage on Saturday night with Nashville pop artist, Mat Kearney. (You may recognize his tune, "Nothing Left to Lose," from its frequent radio airplay.) I'll tell you now, this is a chick show (think Garden State meets Grey's Anatomy). The guitar-heavy pop will please the ladies and should make for a pleasant evening of gelato-sweet music.
