UPDATED: North Texas rockers face off for a spot at EdgeFest 2010

Each Wednesday, The Local Edge takes over Trees for an interactive concert series aimed at selecting the perfect North Texas band to open up Edge Fest 2010. The series only just began last week, and will run each week through April. Listeners can vote online each week until 6 p.m. Wednesday, and then head over to Trees to wield the mighty power of 100 votes. The winner each week will be closer to the coveted slot to kick off the legendary festival next year.

This week pits three acclaimed rock bands against each other in what will surely be a mildly epic battle. Contest darlings Oso Closo, fresh from their fall tour and a victorious Chipotle takeover will play Trees for the first time since it's reopening. (Disclaimer: I'm mad excited to see them again.) Fort Worth's Goodwin were nominated by Fort Worth Weekly for Best Live Band and Band of the Year. Denton's RTB2 rounds out the competition with their Quick “Big Group” win and a handful of Dallas Observer nods. Thursday night, we find out who has the biggest trophy.

This may not be an easy choice for local fans. I found a groovy Goodwin MP3 off their 2004 self-titled album (may be slightly outdated, but it sounds good so that doesn't really matter, does it?) Since RTB2 and Oso Closo have both been guests on The Crisman Show (and I am exceedingly vain), I went ahead and threw those in as well -- you know, for educational purposes. Good luck picking a favorite!

UPDATE: Voting for the October 21 round of The Local Show's competition is now closed; Oso Closo held the online lead ahead of the show, but it could still be anyone's game. Each band drew in an encouraging amount of support despite the nasty weather conditions (especially since many of the fans drove out to Deep Ellum from Fort Worth and Denton). Bottom line, Trees is the perfect spot for rock fans across North Texas to come together for some face-melting good times. Mark from The Local Show will be back next Wednesday with another round, and we'll keep you posted as the semi-finalists are announced over the coming weeks. In the meantime, you know where to catch a great -- and free -- rock show any given Wednesday.

EDGEFEST 2010, great to see they are planning ahead! I wish the EDGEFEST would go BACK to Fair Park, Frisco's place is just too little and it is dull up there!!BTW-I wish they had a better local morning radio show, I miss Jagger and his gang on the early MORNING EDGE radio shows. (guess I could try to listen more to see if the current one is any good or not) Anyway, those were classic and informative shows!
