Lewisville ISD says only print or broadcast media have right to cover the district
LEWISVILLE Our friends at political blog Who'sPlayin? alerted us to this latest bit of Luddite ludicrousness from the Lewisville Independent School District: On Monday, the school board approved a definition of media outlets with whom they would engage on coverage of District events and issues.
That definition excludes all bloggers and online-only news sources like Pegasus News:
“employed by a print or broadcast media outlet that has an official publication with a formal form of distribution and that broadcast media outlets are required to have an official timed newscast measured by the Neilson Rating System.”
Who'sPlayin?'s Steve Southwell suggested to me in an email that this was more an attempt at opacity on the district's part than of time management as they claim.
Regardless, it's a wrongheaded attempt. Hopefully as this news becomes more widespread, they'll rethink their stance.

The tagline on this is hilarious! "Um, it's 2009, not 1909" is very fitting for this backwards policy.

I suggested to Steve that he wear a fedora and put a little card on the brim that says "PRESS" so the ISD will know he's the real deal.

What exactly is the ostensible "reasoning" behind this. Sounds like they don't want anyone who's too independent reporting on them.

Wow. That's bad. Not the story, but the fact that the Lewisville ISD issued a statement in which they misspelled the word "Nielsen."
