Kids and family events in Dallas-Fort Worth, October 29-November 4
It's Halloween week, so that means all Halloween-related events, right? Not necessarily. OK, maybe. But that doesn't mean there isn't other stuff to do. We'll try to give you another option or two.
The Museum of Nature & Science in Dallas will hold a Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) Celebration on Friday, October 30. The celebration of Mexican heritage through the remembrance of the dead is as festive as anything surrounding Halloween, with arts and crafts and candy as part of the festivities.
Grapevine Vintage Railroad will put their Halloween Scream Train into service on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31. But don't let the name fool you -- it's less a haunted house than an opportunity to wear your costumes and do some trick-or-treating at a unique venue.
Since Halloween is essentially a family day, the Plano Centre decided to hold the North Texas Kids Family Expo on October 31. Kids will get to participate in costume contests and parents will be able to visit more than 100 vendors, along with other entertainment options.
Finally, if you only know They Might Be Giants for their '90s work, then check out their show at the House of Blues on October 31. They've become more and more known for their children's music, even winning a 2009 Grammy for Best Children's Album for Here Come the 123s.

If you are looking for a traditional trick or treating venue, try a stroll on Swiss Avenue. The beautiful mansions on Swiss get all decked out in Halloween decorations and there are lots of trick or treaters walking up and down the street (usually there are cops stationed on the street to direct traffic and I believe Swiss is closed off to road traffic).
If you have kids, please make sure they are dressed up for Halloween and they are "of age" for trick or treating (not in high school). It's a slap in the face for the people on Swiss when kids and parents put no effort into their costumes after the residents spend a lot of time, effort, and money to deck out their homes and provide free candy.
