Video: National gay and lesbian task force prepares for Creating Change conference
DALLAS Thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activists will converge in Dallas for the 22nd National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel Feb. 3-7, 2010. Every year, Creating Change brings together organizers and activists working to create a world in which sexual orientations and gender expressions are welcomed and celebrated.
At this year’s conference, activists will strategize on how to advance LGBT equality and acquire the skills needed to build the political power of the LGBT community in 2010 and beyond. Early registration for Creating Change, which will host upwards of 2,000 people from around the United States and beyond, runs through Saturday.
Every year, the Creating Change conference is made possible by the generosity of its volunteers, and 2010 is no exception. Volunteer opportunities are readily available to anyone interested in meeting new people, getting valuable experience working on the event, and directly serving the LGBT community.
Volunteers are also able to contribute by hosting event attendees in their homes for the weekend of the conference. This option provides no-cost housing options for valued conference attendees who may not be in a position to pay for a weekend in Downtown Dallas.
Critical legislative issues specifically affecting the LGBT community include passing a strengthened and expanded federal hate crimes law, passage of an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act and repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Other broader areas of focus will include the need for affordable housing, access to quality/affordable health care, and racial and economic justice-related issues.
Creating Change has been the opportunity for thousands of committed people to develop and hone their skills, celebrate victories, build community, and to be inspired by visionaries of our LGBT movement and allied movements for justice and equality.
