Toronto Blue Jays 18, Texas Rangers 10
ARLINGTON The Texas Rangers nearly stormed back from a 11-0 deficit Sunday, only to lose 18-10 to the Toronto Blue Jays at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The loss, the third in their last four games, dropped Texas to 14-15 in August and 72-58 overall.
With the loss, Texas dropped to six full games behind the LA Angels for first place in the AL West, and four games behind the idle Boston Red Sox for the wild card.
Rangers rookie starter Derek Holland was abysmal for the second straight outing, surrendering ten runs on seven hits over just three innings. Holland, who a few weeks ago was showing tremendous promise in winning three straight, has now fallen to 7-9 with a 5.62 ERA.
Despite going down 11-0 after just five innings, the Rangers were able to chip away at that seemingly insurmountable lead in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, coming to within a run at 11-10 before the wheels fell off in the top of the ninth -- Toronto scored seven more runs to re-capture the blowout.
Several Rangers had big days at the plate. Taylor Teagarden went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, Ian Kinsler went 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs, and Nelson Cruz hit a three-run, two-out home run in the fifth to kickstart the near-rally.
