Inaugural Taste of Greenville Avenue event coming to Greenville Avenue on October 24

24

— The Greenville Avenue Restaurant Association has set Saturday October 24 as the date of its first "Taste of Greenville Avenue" event (nicknamed TOGA 2009). This event will be open to the public at no charge and will take place on the grounds of the Vickery Towers at Belmont and Greenville Avenue.

TOGA 2009 is designed in the model of a neighborhood block party, targeted to residents within three miles of Greenville Avenue. By scheduling TOGA 2009 as a daytime event, they hope to see parents and children enjoying our food. They've invited more than 100 restaurants from Greenville Avenue north of Mockingbird Lane, Henderson Avenue, Mockingbird Lane, and Skillman Avenue to participate.

There will be 30 booths presenting the signature items of participating restaurants. Prices would be based on sample portions, there would be minimal food duplication, a kids area, a small (and very controlled) beer garden and public service areas for the City of Dallas Mobile 311 van, Dallas Area Rapid Transit, the Dallas Police Department Neighborhood Policing Unit (Central Division), a pet adoption center, a Dallas Fire/Rescue hook and ladder, etc.

Says Jim Bradberry, President, The Greenville Avenue Restaurant Association, "We're holding TOGA 2009, which we absolutely intend to make an annual event along with other projects like quarterly dine-around’s, to give back something to the community which supports our businesses every day.

"It still amazes me that for nearly 40 years there has never been a restaurant association on Greenville Avenue - we have so much to give to our neighbors, the schools and the community, and all we needed was an outlet for it. GARA serves as that much needed outlet."

The web site address for the event and the association’s online restaurant directory is the same.

A bartender buddy of mine told me that Avi Adelmann's behind this. He's been pushing this to every place on Greenville trying to make a payday. Sooooo the same guy that crusades against the St. Patrick's street party wants to have his own party on the front lawn of a retirement home. Guess its a totally different situation when you're getting paid. Or paid-off, whichever this is. The idea sounds good, but with Avi at the helm, this should be a lead balloon...

I think it's brilliant.

If his goal is to drive bars out, then boosting restaurants is perfect. In a passive aggressive way, he also blatantly "outs" the pure bars as having no food presence.

I gotta tip my hat to him.

Here's a statement from Jim Bradberry, president of the association:

"Avi is 100% hired as our manager, we're a group of restaurants who hired him as our manager, period. He's very knowledgeable about the internet and he knows the City of Dallas' ins and outs better than anybody alive. As far as other things he's doing, we don't get involved, it's his business. He's been great at doing what we want him to do, which is organize this deal. He has nothing to do with the association other than be a hired manager. We had a conversation with him and said, 'If you do care about Greenville Avenue, we'll give you an opportunity to put your positiveness to work.'

"We all knew we were going to get this stuff going in, every one of us had to look at each other and acknowledge what we'd get into when we took on Avi, but we all agreed that if anybody could do it, it was him."

As much as it pains me to say it, good for Avi for finally taking some positive steps for the Greenville Avenue area.

Who would have imagined that Avi would be having a TOGA party on Greenville??

Sorry, Gavin. That's the kind of unsubstantiated rumor we don't allow to be posted.

Gavin was opining that Avi was moving away from Lower Greenville (doubt it). It was his "why" that was unacceptable.

Where will we park? Is Avi going to be running a valet booth?

"Toga, toga, toga!" Yeah, it's a fortunate acronym op, but it's the party attitude that has been the catalyst for the death of lower Greenville Avenue. Weird that way!

Green, the obvious implication is that people who would have to drive aren't welcome.

The event is on the southern end of Lowest Greenville, according to the website.

I have heard from a restaurant owner who is participating that they have sold 10 booths in the first week to association members, will sell 10 more next week and then have booths from restaurants in other areas near lower greenville.

They also cut a deal with the people who own the large parking lots on Prospect Avenue and Sears Avenue to have free parking on the party day (read: no valets, no parking attendants).

will they close down the street? this reminds me of the old Mayfest celebration, they used to have, on lower greenville, in the 80's. There was so much complaining from the neighborhood/merchants, afterwards, about the cleanup, etc, that they canceled it. Why will this be any different?

they've moved the location to the parking lot of the Granada Theater, see the <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2009/sep/06/taste-greenville-avenue-moving-location-granada-th/">full story here</a>
