Live music events in Dallas-Fort Worth, September 3-6

0

Holiday weekend! You could spend the weekend catching up on yard work and chores around the house or you could go out and get yourself into some musical mischief. This weekend we're highlighting shows all over the area guaranteed to get your mini-break vibe going right (or very, very wrong). We are not responsible for the extraneous amounts of dancing that may consume you.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey / Greg Ginn’s Jambang / Moving Matter

When: Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, 8 p.m.
Where: Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Avenue, Dallas
Cost: $12 - $16
Age limit: 17+

Thursday

Kick the weekend off right with festival veterans, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey at The Granada. Tulsa's post-modern jazz quartet has been garnering critical-acclaim around the world and building a steady following among indie scenesters and jazz-heads alike. Mention Sarah Crisman at the box office and get 2-for-1 admission!

Friday

It's going to be a rock/funk circus at Hailey's on Friday night when Fatty Lumpkin, Backside Pick, and Oso Closo take over the club for a sonic spectacle. Oso is celebrating the CD release of their much-anticipated sophomore release, Today is Beauty's Birthday, by packing the stage with the string section featured on the album. (Let's hope McQueen doesn't land on any of them during one of his signature shredder leaps). As if that weren't enough for one night, Backside Pick will be recording a live album and DVD during their set. So if you're in the mood to shake it -- and be subsequently immortalized on two separate mediums -- be sure to get to the front row early.

Saturday

Grab a hot date and get a rather seductive glimpse of the Fort Worth jazz scene. The very sexy Melissa McMillan will own the room at Scat Lounge with the Shawn Pickler Trio. Of course, you could always go stag -- the band will provide ample support for any mischief afoot.

Sunday

The Boxcar Bandits / The Denton Regulators / Pentagrass

When: Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, 10 p.m.
Where: Boiler Room, 101 West Hickory Street, Denton
Cost: Not available
Age limit: 18+
Full event details »

What's Sunday without a little sacrilege? The Boiler Room in hosting an evening of Denton's finest bluegrass with The Boxcar Bandits, Denton Regulators, and the satanic band, Pentagrass (think Slayer covers on a dobro). Warning: The hippies will be a-dancin' and it may look more or less like a scene from True Blood.
