Sankofa takes Deep Ellum jazz up a notch
DALLAS Each Friday evening, Deep Ellum's Sankofa Kafe and Bar hosts Facebook Fridays Dinner & Jazz. The Cajun soul cuisine/entertainment venue boasts great food and drinks accompanied by jazz reminiscent of the Cotton Club days of Herbie Hancock, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington. High claims for a happy hour hang? Not if you take a closer look at the regular players in this club.
The music onstage offers up an impressive line-up, headed up by Janet Jackson's keyboardist, Daniel Jones. The Sankofa's house bandleader and former band director for Lauryn Hill has a knack for surrounding himself with world-class musicians. His company playing the thirty-something crowd through rush hour (sans traffic) includes Grammy-award winning Dallas drummer Robert "Sput" Searight. Of course, this is on the Fridays when Sput isn't touring with Snoop Doog or Snarky Puppy. Sput has also played with heavy hitters Erykah Badu and Kirk Franklin. The house band rounds out with Lamont Taylor (also of the infamous Snarky Puppy), and saxophonist Shelley Carrol (formerly of UNT's Grammy-nominated One O'Clock Lab Band). You can bet these cats are serious about jazz.
Naturally, reservations are encouraged. With wallet-friendly drink specials until 7 p.m. and live music until 1 a.m., you're going to want to make an evening of it.

It just so happens that I saw an episode of History Detectives the other night that featured The Cotton Club. He obviously never played at the original, but he did play at the second iteration in Harlem.

Mike that is good research, while the Cotton Club was a big..hideout,I missed the History Detectives special, then again.....the Underworld loves that kind of hide out and placement for pleasures ,as with Deep Elm it was more of a live country juke joint place, where folks would get off from work and play, gambling and love makeing for money included...
Then again Cab Calloway did hit the Elm and Majestic I recall.. What an era from 1917 to 1939... A/T, Some did like it hot at the Cotton Club in New York..not in Dallas..

forget the historical aspects if Herbie Hancock was old enough to play the cotton club or not....Does this jazz club make Deep Ellum safer? Does it revive Deep Ellum? is there a bus that goes thru Deep Ellum? is this the same bus that will go see Bush speak in arlington? Did Herbie Hancock play IN FRONT of the Cotton Club, when he was a baby? Will the Cowboys make the playoffs, this year? HOW BOUT THEM RANGERS!!! sorry for the rant....bout to head to houston to see the Jets play on Sunday...
