— The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi recently recognized the Texas Woman's University chapter as a Chapter of Merit.

This award, which is in its first year, is given to chapters that comply with the society's national standards and demonstrate an active commitment to excellence. By receiving the Chapter of Merit distinction, TWU's Phi Kappa Phi chapter is being recognized as a thriving organization that meets frequently, holds annual initiations, and applies frequently for Phi Kappa Phi's select scholarships, grants, and fellowships.

"Being named as a Chapter of Merit speaks to the academic quality of our faculty and students and their leadership in scholarly excellence and service," said Dr. Judith Bean, associate vice president for undergraduate studies and the past president of the TWU Phi Kappa Phi chapter. "This award also recognizes our students who compete nationally to receive Phi Kappa Phi fellowships and scholarships."

In recent years, TWU members have received the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi graduate fellowship, including Rachel Zimmerman in 2009 and Shaina Porter in 2006. TWU students also have received the organization's Award of Excellence scholarship.

The TWU Phi Kappa Phi Chapter increased its new initiates by 44% in 2009 compared to 2008.

The Phi Kappa Phi Chapter of Merit Award includes:

* a citation from the Society president;

* a commendation letter sent to chapter officers and campus administration;

* special recognition on Society website, publications, and at Phi Kappa Phi's National Convention;

* a specially designed logo for use in chapter communications; and

* a $100 award

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. The Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Program is one of its most visible and financially-supported endeavors, allocating more than $800,000 annually to deserving students for first-year graduate study.
