The African American Repertory Theater (AART) presents Master Harold and the Boys by Athol Fugard. This play is winner of the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding new play, and the London Critics' Circle Theater Award. AART's production will be directed by Sharon Benge. The play will open on Friday, October 16, 2009, and run through Sunday November 1, 2009, at the Desoto Corner Theatre. A Preview Performance will be presented on Thursday, October 15, 2009, at 7:30 PM. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m.
Master Harold and the Boys is a blistering fusion of the personal and the political, according to a New York Times review. This drama is a coming-of-age story about a white teen that has grown up in the affectionate company of two black waiters who work in his mother's tea room in Port Elizabeth and learns his viciously racist, alcoholic father is on his way home from the hospital. This play is considered by many to be Fugard's masterpiece. The three cast members of this award winning play include Andrew Bourgeois, William (Bill) Earl Ray, and Christopher Dontrell Piper.
When the play opened on Broadway in 1982, The New York Post called it, "One of those depth charge plays [that] has lasting relevance [and] can triumphantly survive any test of time... The story is simple, but the resonance that Fugard brings to it lets it reach beyond the narrative, to touch so many nerves connected to betrayal and guilt."
