Live music events in Dallas-Fort Worth, September 10-12

1

There is no excuse for not getting out of the house this weekend. We are playing host to some stellar talent, and it would be rude to not go dance whilst they play us some funky good times.

Thursday

as the years go passing by

As the legend goes, 12-year-old Tom "Pops" Carter left Shreveport, Louisiana in 1930 -- just as he had started working the cotton fields. He packed everything he owned in a pillowcase and headed for Houston, where within a year he had hooked up with a 13-piece band. A Dentonite since 1969, Pops has been drawing on the reservoir of aspiring musicians studying at the University of North Texas' music school. In 1990, Pops teamed up with guitarist Christopher Tracey to form The Funkmonsters. Over the years the band lineup has been a veritable Who's Who of Texas R&B and jazz musicians. Pops has sung with many legends of the blues: B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughn, to name a few. If Pops shows up at a party, you know it's going to be good.

Lovable funk-master George Clinton is the legendary and internationally renowned grandfather of funk and the founder of the Parliament — Funkadelic. He has sold millions of records and concert tickets over the years. Lucky for us, Jazz by the Boulevard scored the P-Funk as the opening headliner. General admission seats are five bucks -- you can't beat that.

Saturday

Fine, we admit it. We discovered Chairlift on the iPod commercial last summer -- but so did you! We can't help it that Apple knows what music lovers want. Now the catchy-electronica Brooklynites are returning to Texas and making a stop at Hailey's with Sydney Confirm and Michachu. Expect to see plenty of bubbly hipsters bopping around with their Pabst Blue Ribbons and skinny jeans -- can't wait! I got bruises on my knees for you and grass stains on my knees for you, got holes in my new jeans for you, got pink and black and blue...

Chairlift / Michachu / Sydney Confirm

When: Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, 10 p.m.
Where: Hailey's, 122 Mulberry Street, Denton
