North Texas group celebrates Greyhound Awareness Month
The Greyhound Adoption League of Texas (GALT) celebrates Greyhound Awareness Month with various events and fundraisers throughout September, with the focal point on September 12 and 13.
Greyhound Awareness Month is a time chosen each year to honor the Greyhound and its relatives throughout the world. The purpose of this international event is to raise the public's awareness of the wonder and magic of Greyhounds as pets, educate others on the current status of Greyhounds around the world.
On Saturday September 12 from 2:30-5 p.m., GALT will host a “Greyhound Spa” at VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital, featuring microchipping ($20), nail trims ($5), ear cleaning, dental check, and weigh-ins for a “Greyt” spa experience (all breeds welcome). Additionally, there will be for purchase a selection of belly bands and embroidered collars.
The Blessing of the Hounds and Memorial Balloon Release at Les Lacs Park on Sunday, September 13 from 5-7 p.m. is free and open to all greyhounds. Guests can bring chairs, blankets and a picnic to enjoy the evening.
More than 60 available Greyhounds will be shown at eight meet-and-greets scheduled on September 12 and 13. For a complete list of GALT Greyhound Awareness Month activities go to www.GALTX.org or call 972.503.GALT.
At both events, GALT will be collecting used leashes, collars, and muzzles for SOS Galgos (Spanish greyhounds), a sister rescue group in Spain, where the plight and mistreatment of “Galgos,” is still very much an issue. GALT has received 5 dogs from SOS Galgos since 2001 and placed them into their “forever homes.”
