Second Thought Theatre announces 2009-2010 season
Second Thought Theatre’s new team of producers is proud to announce their ambitious and visually stimulating sixth season. STT will continue producing in the Studio at the Addison Theatre Center.
The first show, A Lie of the Mind, by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Sam Shepard, shows us the aftermath of a romance torn asunder by spousal abuse, and the war that breaks out between their two families. Jake is in agony for killing the woman he loves. Beth has survived, but only physically. A Lie of the Mind depicts the many ways that our heads protect us from our hearts. STT starts the season with some true American grit and quality family time. Trick or Treat? October 29 – November 14. Directed by Mac Lower, a fresh up-and-coming Dallas director.
Up next, Peter Sinn Nachtrieb’s Hunter Gatherers is an uproarious dark comedy that attempts to examine man’s evolution into the most civilized of all earth’s creatures. Pam and Richard annually celebrate their anniversary with their best friends, Wendy and Tom who also share the same anniversary, and after an initial animal sacrifice, we soon discover that may not be all they share. The party grows increasingly savage as the couples digress to primal instincts to survive through the night. Come out and celebrate wrecked resolutions with STT and get in touch with your inner beast. January 14 – January 30. Directed by Jonathan Taylor, Kitchen Dog Theater ensemble member and director of STT’s highly acclaimed Some Girl(s).
When an egomaniacal man and an erratic woman meet over a Power Lunch, they instantly connect, but very quickly detest one another. This combative comedy by Alan Ball, who won an Oscar for his screenplay American Beauty and numerous nominations for TV’s Six Feet Under, examines the role that gender plays in determining who really holds the power in relationships. The sparks fly, as do the insults, as these two power hungry people stop an nothing to be on top. Don’t miss this hilarious highlight at Loop 2010. Directed by STT company member and graphic designer Greg MacPherson.
Second Thought continues its Reading Series this year with two original world premieres. The first will be the chosen script of our first annual STT Texas playwriting contest and the second will be a glimpse at Second Thought’s very own rising writing talent. Get a first look at the creative stylings manufactured in your very own backyard and as always have a first-hand say on how these plays could be shaped. Interested in submitting? Contact info@secondthoughttheatre.com. February 20 – 21 and February 26 - 27.
Second Thought closes its 6th season with Kira Obolensky’s Lobster Alice, a surreal look at Alice in Wonderland as experienced by John Fitch and his secretary Alice Horowitz. Salvador Dali arrives in the office to help with Finch’s latest animation project and transforms the couple’s lives from mundane and static to imaginative and adventurous as the story begins to leap off the pages and swirl in a melting Dali landscape draining down a rabbit hole. You won’t want to miss this comic and ambitious visual feast. April 21 – May 8. Directed by the DFW theatrical visionary himself, Jeffery Schmidt, company member at Theatre Three.
