Macon Elementary School in Dallas will plant a “People’s Garden”

1

— The USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the People Empowerment Project and Dallas Independent School District’s B.H. Macon Elementary School have united to plant a “People’s Garden” on the school’s campus to teach students about the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables in their diets, to help with community beautification, to promote volunteerism and community-building, and to support President Barack Obama’s community garden initiative.

The garden will be launched at 9 a.m., Friday, Sept. 18. Dr. Janey Thornton, USDA Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services deputy under secretary; Larry Duncan, Dallas County school board president; and B. H. Macon Elementary Principal Kathy Snyder, as well as her students and staff, will be present during the ceremony.

B. H. Macon Elementary School is located at 650 Holcomb Rd. The school has received a Recognized or Exemplary classification by the Texas Education Agency since 2003.
