1900 McKinney becomes first multi-family development in Dallas to receive LEED Certification

0

1900 McKinney and its parent company, The Hanover Company, announced today that 1900 McKinney has been awarded LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). It is the first multi-family development in Dallas to receive this certification.

“Building operations are nearly 40% of the solution to the global climate change challenge,” said Ed Hamilton, Acquisitions & Development Partner, The Hanover Company. “The Hanover Company’s mission is to address local solutions through our innovative projects such as 1900 McKinney.”

“The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most-important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on non-sustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The work of innovative building projects such as 1900 McKinney is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement.”

LEED is the USGBC’s leading rating system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings. LEED certification is a voluntary program and can be applied to any building type. It focuses on nine key areas when awarding certification: if the building was a sustainable site, meaning there was no development on previously undeveloped land; water efficiency, both inside and out of the building; energy and atmosphere by applying strategies such as energy use monitoring, efficient design and construction, efficient appliances, systems and lighting, etc.; materials and resources, with the selection of sustainably grown, harvested, produced and transported products and materials during construction and operation stages; indoor environmental quality, including access to natural daylight; and locations and linkages, which rewards homes that are built near already-existing infrastructure, community resources and transit, and it encourages access to open space for walking, physical activity and time spent outdoors.

In addition to incorporating Green building practices in the design and construction process, 1900 McKinney features smoke free environments, a recycling center and special provisions for residents with fuel-efficient vehicles. It was designed by Gromatzky Dupree & Associates and was The Hanover Company’s first project to seek LEED certification.
