Live music events in Dallas-Fort Worth, September 24 - 27

2

Grab your passport and a carload of friends, this weekend's shows will make you feel like you're backpacking around the world.

Thursday

Monotonix / Harlem / The Uptown Bums

When: Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, 10 p.m.
Where: Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio, 411 East Sycamore Street, Denton
Cost: $14
Age limit: 17+
Full event details »

There are a few shows that become immortalized through local lore -- stories told and retold by not only those fortunate to share the original experience, but also by those who can't help but share in the enthusiasm that such a music event ever occurred. Herein lies Monotonix, the Israeli punk band that infamously plays half-naked whilst crowd surfing. Their NX35 show has become legend and served as a three-month word-of-mouth wildfire promotion for the September 24 show at Rubber Gloves. Come early, the house is going to be packed (be sure to wear sensible mosh-ready shoes, and maybe a rugby helmet). Check this video below to see footage of the last Monotonix show at Hailey's (and hear Heath Squire's personal account of the evening).

Friday

Snarky Puppy / Keite Young / Givers

When: Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, 10 p.m.
Where: Hailey's, 122 Mulberry Street, Denton
Cost: $8 - $10
Age limit: All ages

Fort Worth's Keite Young, singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has the gospel-tinged soul grooves reminiscent of Raphael Saadiq, Al Green, and Q-Tip. He'll be funking his way on stage with Snarky Puppy at Hailey's on Friday night. The former member of Kirk Franklin's The Family will also be joined by Lafayette's Givers (who are just about to hit the road with underground rock darling, Dirty Projectors). This show makes us feel like dancing.

Saturday

Datarock / Esser

When: Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, 9 p.m.
Where: Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Avenue, Dallas
Cost: Not available
Age limit: 17+
Full event details »

Norway's DIY-punk rockers, Datarock will be stopping through The Granada as a part of a worldwide tour spanning over 50 cities. Hailing from the fertile musical land home to Kings of Convenience and Roykssop, Datarock is heavily influenced by the distinctive style and stage presence of groups like Talking Heads and Devo (as evidenced by the Casio MT-64 keyboard and Roland Groovebox).

Sunday

Asobi Seksu / Matthew and the Arrogant Sea

When: Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, 10 p.m.
Where: Hailey's, 122 Mulberry Street, Denton
Cost: $10 - $12
Age limit: All ages
Full event details »

Asobi Seksu (colloquial Japanese that literally translates to "playful sex"), will be bringing their multi-dimensional flirty rock from New York City to Hailey's alongside Matthew and the Arrogant Sea. Expect other-worldly voices to haunt the club over the intense, yet understated instrumentation. I've got goosebumps just thinking about the shoegazing madness. (But don't just take my word for it, have a listen).

I understand the Levitt Pavilion opens their Fall season tonight with Brave Combo. Free music under the stars in downtown Arlington.
