Jerry L. Buchmeyer

— Hon. Jerry L. Buchmeyer passed away Monday, September 21, 2009. Judge Buchmeyer served in many capacities with the Dallas Bar Association (DBA). His years of bar leadership began in 1972, and service included past president in 1979, vice president, chairman of the board, trustee, and charter fellow of the Dallas Bar Foundation.

“Judge Buchmeyer leaves a remarkable legacy of service,” said Christina Melton Crain, president of the Dallas Bar Association.

He was instrumental in acquiring the Belo Mansion for the DBA, and served as vice chairman of the Capital Campaign. A longtime supporter of the Texas High School Mock Trial Program, Judge Buchmeyer judged the final round of the event for many years.

Judge Buchmeyer was especially noted for his humorous column, “et cetera,” which appeared in the Dallas Bar Association publication, Headnotes, and continued in the Texas Bar Journal. In addition, he was one of the original members of the Dallas Bar’s “Tuesday Night Irregulars,” a group that got together to read poetry and tell jokes.

U.S. President Jimmy Carter appointed Judge Buchmeyer to the federal bench in 1979, just prior to the completion of his term as DBA president.

“Judge Buchmeyer was admired for his diversity and work in the areas of desegregation and Dallas public housing,” said Crain. “He served the DBA well and was a committed member. He will always be remembered for his intellect, humor and his support of the DBA. He will be deeply missed in our association and our profession.”
