Arlington police shoot aggressive dog
ARLINGTON Arlington police were called to the 5900 block of Inks Lake Drive near Cravens Park at about 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, regarding an aggressive dog in the area. The dog had snapped at one person and tried to bite another, according to witnesses. When officers arrived, they were notified that two dogs -- male and female, and both Boxer breeds -- were seen walking around Bebensee Elementary School. At one point, the dogs walked into the fenced playground area of the school, where about 50 children were outside at that school playground.
Two Arlington police officers spotted the dogs and placed themselves between the group of elementary school children and the dogs. The male dog matched the description of the dog that had snapped and tried to bite others earlier. When the dog’s behavior turned aggressive toward the officer, he fired one shot at the dog, striking him. The officers had strategically placed themselves so that the children were behind them and an open field was behind the dogs.
Following the incident, officers were trying to locate the female dog, who had not shown any signs of aggression. The male dog, who was shot, is expected to survive his injury.

The open field ain't that big... there are houses everywhere adjacent. Lucky no stray bullets hit one. Our whole neighborhood is a-buzzin after this incident...

Sounds a little extreme. Can you imagine having to see that as a child?

Depends. If the boxer truly was aggressive, I'm sure I'd rather see it shot than coming at me...especially as a wee elementary school tot.

jtmbls: No, but I can easily imagine being bitten by one as a child, since it almost happened to me when I was a wee one.
Luckily, my girlish screams apparently scared the dog off before it could do more than scratch me a little.
