Texas Rangers 8, Tampa Bay Rays 3
ARLINGTON The Texas Rangers got a little closer to pulling out the impossible Friday night, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 8-3 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The win improved Texas to 84-69 on the season.
With the win, Texas' hopes of getting into the playoffs improved slightly. The Rangers are now 6 1/2 games behind the LA Angels for first place in the AL West, pending the results of the late Angels-A's game, and seven games behind the Boston Red Sox for the wild card with nine to play.
Rangers rookie starter Derek Holland picked a great time to snap his personal five-game losing streak, surrendering just three runs on five hits over five not-terrible innings. Holland improved to 8-12 with a 6.14 ERA on the year.
The Rangers lineup didn't collect a lot of hits, but they made the most of their eight hits by scoring eight runs. Leadoff rookie extraordinaire Julio Borbon went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two stolen bases, bringing his season total to 19. Chris Davis hit his 20th home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the second, and Ian Kinsler added his 30th, a three-run, two-out shot in the eighth that sealed the game.
