Organized through the auspices of Keep Coppell Beautiful, this two-part Master Composter Seminar places an emphasis on sustainable landscaping with a focus on the benefits of homemade compost.
To be held on consecutive Saturdays in October (Oct. 24 and Oct. 31) from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., the composting training qualifies participants for certification through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. (Attendance at both sessions is mandatory for certification -- as is 20 hours of volunteer community service spent educating others about the benefits of compost.)
The classes are open to anyone with an interest in the subject matter. (And decomposing matter.) There will be both classroom and outdoor "hands-on" (*GULP!*) instruction involved, including a session on worm composting and organic landscaping.
Instructor Shawna O'Brien is a certified master composter and a veteran volunteer at the Coppell Community Garden.
The sessions will be held at the Coppell Service Center, 816 S. Coppell Rd., and there is a $40 registration fee. However, the fee includes a compost bin with a retail value of $50, along with the Rodale Book of Composting, a Texas Green Guide to YardCare booklet, and lunch both days. Can you say, "bargain?" (I knew you could.)
Registration closes on Monday, Oct. 19, so call now to reserve your place: 972-462-5100; or email Keep Coppell Beautiful for further details: KCB@ci.coppell.tx.us.
