Fort Worth student died of unknown causes

3

— Fort Worth ISD counselors will be at a district school today to support students and staff mourning the death of a student. The student died Sunday after being hospitalized. No cause of death has been announced. No additional specific information regarding the student or the school will be released in order to protect the privacy of the family.

Fort Worth ISD understands that in the current seasonal environment parents are concerned with potential infection. While Fort Worth ISD has no information regarding the cause of death, in an over abundance of caution, school custodial staff worked overnight to thoroughly clean the school -- classrooms and lockers -- with approved sanitizers. This step was taken strictly as a measure of assuring parents, staff, and students that the district is mindful of their safety in all situations.

Fort Worth ISD has several monitoring models in operation to assess student and staff absence trends. Letters were sent to parents last week, shared with the news media and posted on the district website reminding everyone of the suggested precautionary measures to prevent the spread of germs.

Fort Worth ISD continues to remain in close communication with Tarrant County Public Health for guidance and assistance.

Tarrant County Public Health just issued a release here investigating a Fort Worth ISD student's death. The student died on Sunday (like this student did), though we do not have confirmation they are the same case yet. Tarrant County Public Health says of the student they're investigating, "the investigation concerns the possibility that influenza may have been a contributing cause of death."

This is really hitting close to home, which is why I have to share this experience- it could help prevent H1N1 germs! My child came home from school saying that they learned to cough and sneeze into their elbow with Germy Wormie, and I was totally taken aback. I always covered with my hands. But I went to the website and now I get it, hands touch, elbows don't!! Kids can touch 300 surfaces in 1/2 hour and they hate to wash their hands. This is a simple thing that can make a huge difference.

Whatever, I sneeze in other people's elbows. Why would I want germs anywhere on my body?
