In other words, no playoffs for the Rangers this year, either.

The Texas Rangers re-defined the word "failure" Monday night, losing 11-0 to the LA Angels in California in a game they had to win. The loss was their second straight, and dropped Texas to 85-71.

With the loss, Texas was all but eliminated from any hope of postseason play. Texas now trails the Boston Red Sox by six games with six games remaining in the season. The loss also meant that the Rangers, who led the AL West for much of the season, gifted the division to their hated rivals.

Rangers rookie starter Tommy Hunter was somewhat less than impressive, surrendering seven runs on seven hits over two-plus innings. Hunter, who started the season 6-2 with a 2.64 ERA, is now 9-5 with a 4.10 ERA on the year.

The Rangers up-and-down offense didn't do Hunter any favors, faltering when the stage got too big. The team collected just seven harmless hits -- six of which were singles -- and managed to draw just one walk all game. Only veterans Michael Young (2-for-3 with a double) and Ian Kinsler (2-for-4) seemed to exert themselves in this elimination game.
