UT Arlington set to hold 29th annual Bed Races

0

— The University of Texas at Arlington will attempt to break the record for the state's largest collegiate pillow fight at the 29th annual Bed Races Thursday, Oct. 1.

As one of the oldest traditions on the UT Arlington campus, the unusual sport features students pushing beds on wheels at full speed, with one team member riding on the bed, in a timed dash to the finish line. The 6 p.m. event is open to the public and will be held at Maverick Stadium.

Registration for the "Running of the Beds" event begins at 6 p.m. Thursday. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29. Those who register early can request shirt sizes. Entry forms must be returned to the lower level of the UT Arlington University Center. Late entries will be accepted until 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The cost is $40 per team with each team consisting of five members. The late entry fee is $10. Only 100 teams will be accepted. If 100 teams have not entered, teams will still be accepted until the start of the event. Teams must wear approved or provided helmets. Knee and elbow pads are highly recommended.

Awards will be given by division (women's, men's and co-ed). There will also be an award for a field goal kicking contest winner, for the most creative costume, and for a team wearing a costume with the most school spirit.

The races are sponsored by EXCEL Campus Activities and the Department of Campus Recreation. Participants can take part in bungee and mechanical bull riding. For more information on "Running of the Beds," click here.
