Restaurant review: Highlands Cafe in Dallas

The Garrett Sisters check out the Lake Highlands neighborhood joint.

Highlands Cafe

Wednesday night we decided to head over to Lake Highlands and give Highlands Café a try. We knew not to expect gourmet food, but sometimes home cooking is just as delicious.

You walk in and immediately can sense the neighborhood feel. There are kids running around and folks of all ages are seated throughout the joint. You order from a counter up front and get a number. As soon as your food is done, a friendly neighborhood gal brings it to your table. We opted to sit on the patio -- it was a bit breezy but seemed to be a kid-free zone.

Before your food comes out, you are served a complimentary basket of chips and salsa. The chips were a bit stale, but it was a nice gesture.

Emily ordered the rosemary and chicken ravioli with green beans as her side. The ravioli was topped with a marinara sauce and filled with ricotta, mushrooms, and chicken. Overall, the dish seemed to be lacking flavor.

I ordered the Wednesday nightly special -- chicken pot pie. You had the choice of either getting a side salad or green beans. I went with the green beans. The pot pie was served in an individual dish and covered in puff pastry. Inside was a generous helping of chicken and vegetables served in a country brown gravy. Overall, the dish was pretty good. Emily and I both agreed that the green beans were fresh and crisp!

Jason ordered the chicken finger basket and was disappointed. The fries were soggy and the ranch was not up to par.

I don’t think we will be venturing over here again since we aren’t Lake Highlanders, but if you are looking to share a meal with your neighbors, this might be your spot!
