North Texas movie news and notes: Breathlessly waiting for Godard edition

On the 50th anniversary of the seminal New Wave film, the Dallas Angelika gets a specially-restored print.

Raoul Coutard did the cinematography for French New Wave auteur Jean-Luc Godard on the 1960 shoot of Breathless, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. Starting Friday, the Dallas Angelika will be playing a specially-restored print of the groundbreaking film -- a restoration supervised by Coutard himself.

If you've always heard about Breathless but never seen it, now's your chance to catch it in this exclusive limited theatrical run. (Don't delay.)

Also this Friday, Hubble 3D opens at several area IMAX theaters, including AMC The Parks at Arlington; AMC Stonebriar (Frisco); AMC Firewheel (Garland); and AMC Mesquite 30. Remember: Not only can no one hear you scream in space, but it's also pretty dang cold out (up?) there. In pleasant contrast to the current temperature regime here in North Texas. (Just something to think about while you're getting an eyeful of distant galaxies.)

Coming up on Wednesday, August 25 at 10 p.m. is a FREE Horror Remix show at the Dallas Studio Movie Grill (Royal @ Central). This one's called "Shopping," and it includes only the best of the worst from three retail-themed chop shop classics: The Initiation ('84), Hide and Go Shriek ('88), and Chopping Mall ('86). Bring your AMEX gold card: In case they lock you into the theater, you can use it as a shim.

[NOTE: Ignore the "Wed., July 8 at 10 p.m." graphic on the trailer.]

REGULAR OPENINGS this weekend include The Switch, Lottery Ticket, and Nanny McPhee Returns. Three notable independent pictures also bow at local movie houses: Cairo Time, Winnebago Man, and Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child.

For whatever reason, two of this week's openers -- Vampires Suck and Piranha 3D -- did not screen in advance for press. (Unless you count 9 p.m. on the night before opening day as "advance," in which case Vampires Suck SORT of did.) I'll try to catch Piranha at a Friday matinee and get that one written up over the weekend. If anyone wants to take a stab at Vampires, feel free to send me some verbiage and I'll see about posting it as a guest review.

(Damn, I HATE having to actually pay for movies!)

AH! -- one last note as I go to post: Since the folks at the USA Film Festival were kind enough to forward along some images from the feature films playing at next Monday's TexFest event at the Dallas Angelika, I'm including this little photo gallery to remind you to attend.

Old Settlers' Park and Recreation Center

On May 22, 2013, the City of McKinney sponsored an open Pickleball Tournament at the Old Settler's Recreation Center that turned out to be totally unorganized. The courts were not prepared ahead of time and the tournament brackets had to be completed by an outside player instead of already being completed by the sponsor. The wait time between matches was at times over two hours. My group from Denton arrived at the Tournament at 8:30 AM as instructed by the sponsor for registration. My first match wasn't until 2:00 PM and at 7:10 PM the tournament was finally into the ...
