Denton Community Market expands to capitalize on local culture
There's so much more to Denton than fruits and herb.
The Farmer's Market just off the square is taking on a distinctively Denton spin when it re-opens in April. The Denton Community Market is already hard at work bringing together the diversity of the community in an ecologically and economically-minded creative collaboration set to encourage the sustainability of local growers, merchants, artists, and musicians. (It is Denton, after all.)
Presently stationed at the corner of Sycamore and Carroll, the market is in a convenient place for visitors and residents to pass through on a leisurely Saturday.
"We don't have that enough," said organizer Alli Flannigan, "the Farmer's Market is really sad – there are like five people out there in the beating hot sun. We want to bring more people out."
The Community Market team of volunteers is focused on drawing people out and keeping them on the premises for at least an hour. They are reaching out to local vendors and musicians to set up shop at the monthly market.
"We want to bring people together," said Flannigan, "and it only costs $10 to start a booth!"
They are also planning family-friendly activities, like a recycled kid's craft section for the rugrats to hang out in while parents browse the various booths. Added bonus for farming through local talent: Live music will abound each week, making Dentonites feel at home and giving visitors a nice taste of homegrown charm.
The market will be open every second Saturday from April through November. For more information, call Kati Trice at 972-536-3145.
