Restaurant review: The Garden Cafe in Dallas
There are enough substantial items on the list to please even the heartiest of eaters.
The Garden Cafe is a spot that I probably never would have found on my own, despite having read about it several times.
Open for breakfast and lunch, you walk into this cafe, place your order at the counter, and then find a suitable seat amidst tables and booths and a crowd that clearly frequents the joint. Garden Cafe is situated on a plot of land that, as the name implies, houses a garden. The items grown in the garden are used in the dishes they serve up in the kitchen, giving this little spot its own charm.
Each day, the Cafe serves a special, and we happened to land on chicken and dumplings day. My usual complaint with c&d is that there is never enough dumpling to be found. Not the case here. The dumplings were small in size, but heavily dotted the gravy-like soup and made this patron very happy. The platter was served with two vegetables, so we picked carrots and cheese grits. Both were good choices!
We also ordered sandwiches. The BLT had a million pieces of bacon and very fresh lettuce and tomato, all served on wheat bread with a side of potato salad that was the perfect blend of mayonnaise and potato. The chicken salad was served on a delicious croissant.
For dessert, we split the coconut chess pie ... it was to die for. It had a bit of whipped cream on top, but the real goodness came from the pie mixture itself, which was perfectly flavored.
The nice thing about this Cafe, too, is that it will appeal to both genders. It's not too girly, foodwise. I think there are enough substantial items on the list to please even the heartiest of eaters.
After posting on FB that we were going to The Garden Cafe, we learned that their buckwheat pancakes are also to die for. Looks like there will have to be a second trip.

As a vegetarian, with the name "Garden Cafe," I had visions of numerous, beautifully-prepared veggies in abundant portions served in interesting ways. I also had envisioned a garden-like environment, filled with lots of plants and flowers, or a view of same. Instead, I found mediocre veggies in small portions, a small, cramped restaurant, uncomfortable seating, and virtually no ambience. By the look of the photos accompanying the review, things don't appear to have changed.

Dear unlisted, I am the new manager of the cafe (since august 2010). I agree that the menu does not quite fit with the vision many have of the "Garden Cafe". We are making changes. It will take us time to improve, naturally, but we're trying our best. However, I'm a little confused as to your review of the environment. Perhaps you missed the garden in the back. It's roughly an acre in size, and I assure you it's well stocked with many plants and flowers. The other day we collected the herbs for a sachet d'epice that we used for a vegetable stock. Said vegetable stock greatly improved the many menu items previously cooked with water. We also just started serving vegetarian breakfast sausage, and blueberries with pancakes or oatmeal. We'll also be serving Steel Cut Oats soon, and we're in the process of securing a real maple syrup distributor from Vermont. Here's some new soups we've featured: Raw Vegetarian Watermelon Gazpacho, Vegetarian Cool Cucumber, Vegan Mushroom & Wild Rice....The other day we planted Collard Greens, Swiss Chard, and Kale for our winter veggie production. We'll also have an (maybe more than an...like some) operating greenhouse in a couple months. As a new manager I really enjoy hearing from our customers. Feedback of any kind is vital to our success, so I want to thank you for your comment. Have an excellent day! Mark Wootton
