Chicago-style deli opens in Dallas Farmers Market

Old World Sausage Co. brings a taste of Chicago to downtown Dallas.

— After some starts and stops, Old World Sausage Co. is finally open at the Dallas Farmers Market, serving hot and cold sandwiches, salads, and desserts, plus Chicago-based products including pierogis, blintzes, and of course house-made Polish sausage.

Husband-and-wife Al and Adrianne Capua are both from Chicago, although they have different ancestral heritage. Al's from an Italian family, while Adrianne's background is Polish.

"As you know, there's lot of Italians and Polish in Chicago," Adrianne says.

The couple moved to Texas in 1970 and had a Toyota dealership in Fort Worth for 18 years.

"We sold that and he took some off, but we couldn't stand doing nothing," she says. "[Al] liked to cook, so we started doing festivals. We did not realize how many people were from Chicago. People came behind the counter saying they hadn't had a Chicago roast beef in so long."

"We bring in frozen pierogis and blintzes from Alexandra's, they’re wonderful, they have an excellent dough, and there's nothing better with sour cream," Adrianne says. "We get pickles from Lowell Foods, and European yogurt. We're just trying to get the things out of Chicago, so that we can give everyone the taste they’ve missed for so long. We do the Vienna hot dogs. New York is Nathan's but Chicago is Vienna."

But the trademark is the sausage.

"It's my grandfather's recipe," Adrianne says. "He got into the grocery business, he always had his own grocery, he was a butcher and he had the most wonderful polish sausage. Really good sausage."

S Bal says , GROSE ,the worst crap I, was ever served ! The wife and my grand son and my self stoped for a sandwitch , italian beef and italian sausage , the beef was sliced leonchen meat put on a soft bun not crusty italian bread and was soping wet with water from the mushy green peppers and onions you could pic it up and water ran out, pobably a cup and no flayvor at all, like a wet news paper, my grand sons sausge was dry with the wet pepers also, probably made the day befor . Coming from wisconson and Italian it was not any way close to Italian beef and not like Chicago food at all . This place is giving chi food a bad rap !!! Seriously get out of the rest. bisn.

Freddy's Frozen Custard

I asked what a Steakburger is and the friendly staff stated "it is a very high grade of lean beef that is hand-crafted" thin on the edges and thicker in the middle. This makes for carmelization on the edges and a juicy center. The Hawaiian is a must eat on the custard menu. I will definitely be bringing my friends!
