Dallas author questions Christian tradition in How Much Does God Co$t?
Kay Quinn, a preacher's daughter, warns readers of participating in the very church Jesus warned his followers about -- one of hypocrites.
DALLAS Traditional churches collect over $420 billion in tithes and donations annually. In her highly controversial new book, How Much Does God Co$t? (published by AuthorHouse), Kay Quinn asks why -- with an abundant flow of money coming in -- are the needs of donating parishioners left unattended.
How Much Does God Co$t? appears to be against the church at first glance but quite the opposite is true; Quinn, a Christian and preacher's daughter, offers readers an awakening experience through the raw observations she makes in the pages of her book. She forces readers to analyze the doctrine they are following and question if they are truly serving God's law or those created by man. Quinn states: "The people are being led to believe that the only way to get God to move on their behalf is to show him (with their money) how much faith they have. While at the same time, the only one to reap the actual benefit is the false teacher of that man-made doctrine."
In How Much Does God Co$t?, Quinn warns readers of participating in the very church Jesus warned his followers about -- one of hypocrites. She discusses the traditions of men such as tithing, preachers using their positions for personal gain and fame, the physical establishment of the church, and how the church body has turned church into a social club. She firmly believes that the spirit of God does not dwell in the church building itself but in his people, his true church. According to Quinn, the sacrifice of Jesus paid for all of his followers' sins and tithing is an unnecessary practice that puts his death in vain. How much does God cost? According to Quinn, God is free.
In addition, she uncovers through her own research that 87% of those professing to be devout Christians admittedly don't have time to actually study the bible or scriptures outside of their church attendance, reaffirming the idea of church as a social club. Many Christians are moving through the motions of practicing their faith but Quinn worries their hearts are not truly serving God. Quinn writes:
Quinn was born and raised in Dallas. She is the daughter of the late Rev. Odell Christian. Quinn is the founder of the Mutual Freedom Organization, a charitable organization designed to assist the needs of forgotten churches through philanthropic donations. All proceeds from the sales of "How Much Does God Co$t?" will go to the Mutual Freedom Organization.

Ted Howard, verified:
I think taking the stance that since Jesus paid for our sins, therefore we don't have to tithe misses the point.
Tithing is a practice that pre-dates the Mosaic law of the Old Testament. (Gen 14:17-20) and speaks to the core of our relationship with our creator.
Take these facts from scripture: 1) we are made in the image of God (Gen 1:27) 2) God is a giver (John 3:16)
Therefore, when we give, we more closely resemble our creator.
Reducing the concept of tithing to a law that we must follow to attain eternal salvation misses the point and cheapens our relationship with our creator. Failing to tithe doesn't exclude you from God's grace anymore than any other sin, but it can separate your heart from His.
PS: I realize there are some who abuse their position as church leaders to extort money from people. That is wrong, but it doesn't invalidate the importance of giving back to God.

Old Testament scripture should only be used as a history lesson for New Testament Saints. The bible clearly lets us know that Old Testament tithing was for levitical priests! If there are still levitical priests in existence TODAY, then by all means, tithe to them!
For New Testament saints who are free from bondage, we accept Christ as being OUR high priest (a better priesthood) and as such, a tithe is not commanded nor is it required. It has never been required of us as a matter of fact. God loves a cheerful giver and that cheerful giver must not give out of fear, necessity or compulsions - but only as he or she has determined to give in his/her own heart to give. Refer to the New Testament scripture reference 2Corinthians 9:7. It is there for New Testament saints.
This is why it is so imperative that professing Christians study and know what is the law of God and what is the law of men.
May God continue to reveal His words in truth.

I think I disagree with Ted Howard’s comments that failing to tithe can somehow separate your heart from God’s. What bible verse did this fable derive from or who is it that is teaching this sort of doctrine?
Sin and only sin separates the heart of man from God. Short of that, nothing else ever can – For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. That can be substantiated in the New Testament Book of Romans 8:38-39

I agree that the church is more interested in money or membership more than people, The same legalism that the pharisees had is very much alive and well throughout the body of Messiah, crossing demoninations which in its self should be outlawed
