Popolos Cafe in Dallas to close on Saturday

Landlord raised rent.

Popolos Cafe, the venerable bistro at Preston and Royal, will shut down this week due to a hike in the rent, as confirmed by an employee at the restaurant.

"The restaurant had been struggling to get a better rent deal, but that didn't happen, and negotiations broke down," he said.

The restaurant first opened in 1994.

Their closing night is Saturday -- "it's going to be hopping," he said.

They're looking for a new location, but are directing customers to their new sister restaurant, Preston's, which just opened this week.

Man, the restaurant turnover on that side of the Preston/Royal intersection is horrendous. The plaza just across Royal has gone through some four new places in the last six months, and I suspect people are starting to take bets on how long Citrus Bistro is going to last.

I miss Chef Wok. I will miss Popolos. I haven't been impressed with any of the deli iterations in the currently-Zinsky's spot.

If Royal China and Gazeebo Burger fold, I'll be heartbroken.

So where is "Preston's" anyway? Their website -- prestonsdallas.com -- isn't working yet.

I ran up a large tab there last night, and probably will again Saturday. It will be missed to be sure. Prestons isn't a great choice for those that live very close and frequented Popolos, if for no other reason the bar was cozy and it was close to home base.

Himez is a GREAT bartender and will more than likely end up at Prestons. He feeds me wonderful odd ethnic restaurant tips.

Matt, I understand. I was at first thrilled when Bagelstein's moved in that space from up at Coit and Arapaho, but I realized later that it was because I still had fond memories of the old Spring Valley & Coit locale. (Back in the mid-Eighties, when the AMC Northwood Hills 4 theater was still running, I'd go there with friends before catching midnight showings of "Dawn of the Dead".) I was better off with the memories, I'm saddened to say.

Thanks, TG, I'll have to give Preston's a try.

As for Preston/Royal, I'll be pleased when Neighborhood Services opens -- love that place.

This is/was one of our FAVORITE restaurants in all of Dallas. My husband Mark and I courted here many nights over a fabulous bottle of wine, great food and superb service from Sherief. We had our Dallas wedding dinner reception here. I am sad that it is gone and wish I had known to have been able to have one more great experience there. We will now visit the sister restaurant Preston's and give it a whirl. Thanks for the memories, good food and great times!

Is the Preston's everyone talking about the same as the one that was at Preston and Belt Line years ago? I was sad when that restaurant left because they had wonderful caesar salad and an awesome seafood pasta!
