Restaurant review: Mextopia in Dallas

They have the right idea with the atmosphere, but could stand to work on some flavors.

Mextopia plate of additions for chicken hominy soup

Monday night we decided to try Mextopia on lower Greenville. This place is bright and colorful and welcomes you right in. Once inside there is a large bar area and about 15 tables. They seemed to be doing pretty well for a Monday evening. We were first served chips and salsa. The chips were pretty good and served warm, but the salsa was VERY hot. We then ordered margaritas, but they only offered on the rocks. That was fine, it still sounded refreshing to us. Too bad they weren't. The mix was overpowering and too tart.

Since we both love Food Network, we decided to try the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives recommendation. This included a chicken hominy soup with the a plate of additions. We liked this idea, as it allowed for our own customized soup! We opted to put in a little bit of all the flavors (onions, peppers, oregano, and lime juice). Overall, this had really nice flavor and was one of our favorite items.

The plate also included a beef gordita that seemed to have very little flavor, a pork tamale, and rice and beans. Overall, we weren't blown away by any one item and were a bit disappointed. They have the right idea with the atmosphere, but could stand to work on some flavors.

there's no such thing as a too tart margarita. One can only hope they weren't using a mix at all. Sounds like it might be worth stopping by..

I actually eat at Mextopia a LOT and was Ricardo's customer from Avila's... I LOVE the food. It isthe freshness and the layers of flavors of the food they serve that keeps me coming back... So I don't know where you two got your taste buds. The Margarita's by the way... FRESH lime juice... maybe your not used to it! TRY it folks ... you'll be addicted too!

I have been to Mextopia a lot since they opened because I live in the neighborhood and don't quite agree with the sisters. By the way, the chicken hominy soup has a name. It's called Pozole and is addictive!!!! There margaritas aren't made with a mix.....it's called real lime juice. Most people are used to cheap margaritas that are made with a "sweet and sour mix" and wouldn't recognize a real margarita if they tasted one. I know this because I have been a bartender. Looks as though they need a better camera and a little more knowledge before posting a review.

Luniz, I agree completely... and the fascination with frozen margs in this city baffles me. Why would I want my margarita watered down... and I say "NO!" to brain freeze, thank you very much.

Lastly, I tend to discount anyone's opinion who complains about salsa being too hot at a mexican restaurant (especially Mextopia's, as it is not that hot) .

Just my two cents...

@ Nick: I love frozen margaritas because the slushiness keeps me from drinking it too fast thereby staving off my drunkenness a bit longer. I have never in my life had a brain freeze. Ever. I hear it hurts.

Yes, there is such thing as a too tart margarita. And if you think a frozen margarita = a watered down margarita, you have never tasted one that was made properly (whether from a blender or a machine, it makes no difference.) Brain freeze is easy to remedy. Don't drink so fast.

Just tried their margaritas this weekend, and they weren't too tart. Our bartender was the best!

What do you think?
