Photo gallery: NORML Rally urges marijuana’s legalization in Dallas (May 1)
The rally was part of the 2010 Worldwide Marijuana March to urge the decriminalization of marijuana.
DALLAS An enthusiastic crowd of about 50 people showed up in downtown Dallas on Saturday as part of the 2010 Worldwide Marijuana March, organized by DFWNORML, the local chapter of The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).
The group met at the Earle Cabell Federal Building at the corner of Griffin and Commerce Streets to raise awareness of the need to decriminalize marijuana use for medicinal purposes.
Participants waved flags and posters, and cheered as cars drove by.
"People are going to jail, just for possession [of marijuana]," explained one participant. Another gentleman who introduced himself as "retired Army" stated that the current marijuana laws are archaic and need to be updated, and that terminal cancer patients should have the option of choosing a more natural solution for pain management than the solutions provided by the pharmaceutical industry.

This was a very successful rally, DFW NORML volunteers did a very good job. There was certainly alot more protestors than "50", my estimate was at least 100 by the time the march started going.

Hey John, Thanks for coming out, enjoyed talking with you. We had many more show up after you left. Our best guess was 300-400 in attendance and had a great show of support from passing motorist. We need more education to all of the failed drug war and its damages to society, which is much worse than any damage caused by drugs. Marijuana does have proven medicinal value. I urge everyone to look at DFWNORML.ORG for more info and links to other orginazations that also have a common goal. J

When I was younger and more naive, I used to think that marijuana's popularity and ubiquity would lead to its eventual legalization. That was before I realized that the whole point of drug laws is to criminalize as many people as possible.

I wish this had been more publicized. I certainly would have attended, and so would a third of the rest of Dallas, had we known. Marijuana laws are most definitely archaic. It's a natural solution to many problems; it's a shame that the crooked and money grubbing heads of state only care about money made from pharmaceutical companies. How do they sleep at night? Probably after a nice, tall glass of the finest Scotch; which is, after all, is MUCH more dangerous that Marijuana. It should be legalized and it should our right as American Citizens to indulge when we like, responsibly. It would thin out the jails, create more tax revenue that would lessen our deficit, and leave time for Police Officers to focus on the "Real Crime." Let us be ourselves and give us our freedom back. It's time. Open your eyes, Government of yesteryear.

Yes John, when did you get your count? We ended up having a few hundred more than 50? Try 300 to 400. Thanks for the coverage, each year we more then double, last year was about 200, this year about 400, next year's goal is over 1,000.
