Dallas foodie “BillUSA99” aka “BK” died Sunday
Native of Canada was known for his wit, his fearlessness, and his unerring tendency to be right.
DALLAS Bill Kennedy, better known in the Dallas bloggy world as "BillUSA99" and "BK," passed away late Sunday from complications due to pancreatic cancer. He was 55.
Kennedy, a native of Canada who was also vice president at a Dallas software company, was a savvy foodie who could comment with authority on everything from Bay of Fundy salmon to the best pad Thai in Dallas.
He was uniquely forthright in a town where people are often afraid to speak their mind, earning him a profile of fearlessness and truthfulness on local food blogs such as DallasFood.org, Belo's Eats, and D Magazine's SideDish. He also had a sharp, well-honed wit. With those characteristics, he helped to elevate the dialog about and knowledge of food in Dallas.
Early in the blogging world, he had his own blog where he documented the construction of the unique home he built with his wife Janine Bradford, and was also one of the few bloggers in Dallas to participate in a blogging amusement called "Friday Cat Blogging," where bloggers around the world would post photos of their cats on Friday. He adopted Bradford's four cats, and has a special fondness for the old cat named Big Puss.
"99 and I are (what used to be called) 'gourmands' and I do not mean that in a haughty way. We cook far more than we eat out. But, she being from New Orleans, we know 4 stars from 4 shots of BS."
He's survived by Bradford, plus three younger brothers, and a variety of family members in Canada.
A memorial will be held on Friday May 7 at 2 p.m. at the Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home on Northwest Highway in Dallas.
