Over four hundred DISD students get a lesson on the Texas Appeals court system

Students will learn from a mock court hearing.

— More than 400 Dallas Independent School District high school students will get a lesson about the Texas courts system — firsthand — as the Fifth District Court of Appeals travels from the courthouse to the Belo Mansion. Three justices will hear oral arguments in an actual case on a theatre stage, as lawyers on both sides of this health care malpractice claim respond to the court’s inquiries. The event is from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Monday, October 18.

The “Appealing to the Public” program is one of the first in the country and made possible through a partnership of the Dallas Bar Association, the Dallas Independent School District, and the Fifth District Court of Appeals.

A national study commissioned by the American Bar Association found that half of the Americans questioned could not identify the three branches of government. It is the goal of the “Appealing to the Public” program to improve the public’s understanding of the justice system and how the appellate process works.

Students from the following DISD high schools will be in attendance: W. H. Adamason, Bryan Adams, David W. Carter, Townview Law Magnet, Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, Seagoville, Skyline, South Oak Cliff, H. Grady Spruce, Sunset, Booker T. Washington, and W.T. White.
