Dean Foods to axe Schepps dairy products in Dallas-Fort Worth by early 2011

Switching over to Oak Farms.

— Dean Foods Company announced that it will convert its retail Schepps-branded dairy products to the Oak Farms brand in the Dallas-Fort Worth area by early 2011. After the transition, both of the company's manufacturing facilities in Dallas will produce Oak Farms-branded products. Currently, one facility produces Schepps products and the other facility produces Oak Farms products. Dean Foods expects the change to result in manufacturing, supply chain, and marketing efficiencies.

To ease the transition for consumers and retailers, beginning the week of October 11, all DFW-area retail customers who currently receive Schepps milk in gallon and half-gallon plastic containers will begin receiving milk carrying a label that includes both the Oak Farms and the Schepps logos. After this transitional period, estimated to be completed by February 2011, all retail dairy products will carry Oak Farms branding exclusively. Some food service products will continue to carry the Schepps name after the transition.

Schepps' sponsorships and commitments in the community, such as the Schepps Reward Program, will continue under the Oak Farms name.

"Our success as a business, and as a strong Dallas employer, depends on our ability to drive efficiency throughout our system," said Rick Zuroweste, Chief Marketing Officer for Dean Foods. "Maintaining two brands in the Dallas market creates inefficiency in manufacturing, delivery routes and packaging costs. This change will allow us to eliminate those inefficiencies and consolidate our marketing support behind a single strong regional brand."

The move allows the company to build upon Oak Farms' strong brand presence throughout the region. Oak Farms already accounts for more than 60 percent of Dean Foods branded white milk in North Texas and more than 80 percent in East Texas. Oak Farms brands are also available from the company's production facilities in Houston, San Antonio and Waco.

"Dean Foods is proud of the Schepps heritage and this was not an easy decision," said Zuroweste. "However, we are confident that the move to the Oak Farms brand in the Dallas area is the right decision for our company, our retail customers, and our consumers, who will continue to find the same great taste and quality in our products."

I have been buying Schepps products for my family for as along as I can remember; I tried the Oak Farms products before, and was not satisfied in comparison to Schepps Dairy. I do not know how to explain the difference other than to say there is a significant difference in the taste.

I have made purchases of the Oak Farms/Schepps Dairy 2% milk in the past two weeks, and I have decided to change to another brand because the milk is not the same as it says on the label.

I am dissapointed to lose my Schepps Dairy products, but it was good as while it lasted.

I have been around the dairy industry all my life. My Dad was plant manager at Borden Milk in Tyler Tx for 20 years...By the early 80's corp. greed began to tear dowm the company also when the Meadow Gold name was invovled. My Dad died of cancer in 83 and did not live to see the company fail in the end. Borden is now owned by LaLa mexican company..they do not even own the Borden name but lease it! How crazy is that? Borden is not Borden at all ! Now take Dean Foods, They have been just as if not more greedy than any Corp. Monster before them. I speak from true knowlege I worked at several Dairy companies such as Borden, Mayfield, Oak Farms, Schepps. I have watched the decay caused from Corp Greed.. It's something Corp Monters will never understand the true cause is them why the company fails in the end. You see when you detroy the most important two things People who are the last to handle the product to the shelf and Sacrifice quality your going down! Just look at Dean now. The person who has the final say is the consumer. Demand quality! Demand the truth ! Demand what right and just. Dairy today does not care about anything but mass production no matter what the price...end the end as you can see they shall fail...and the consumer goes other places...Sad part is we are running out of truthfull companies today...The only good one I know of today is Blue Bell...they are not under a Corp. But still run by Family and Family Values. Hey that’s how America was built, and as consumers we should all stand together and demand the best and not just numbers. Refuse to be a number! Stand up for whats right and just!

I am very sad to see Schepps go because I LOVE buttermilk and the Schepps brand of buttermiilk is SO much better tasting than any other brand on the market.

All the other brands have a bitter edge. Schepps buttermilk has such a gentle flavor, it is almost like drinking liquid sour cream, so rich and delicious with no ugly aftertaste.

I don't know what they did that is so different from everyone else. I saw someone else post the same thing about cottage cheese - their stuff just tastes better. It is sad to lose a brand that is so excellent in what they do.

I agree with the earlier comment comparing Schepps to Oak Farms; IMO Schepps tasted fresher, creamier, more milky...I have swtched brands and will not buy Oak Farms when I have other choices......

The Oak Farms who bought Schepps is horrible. At least they could have kept the Schepps EggNog recipe, after trying every store brand in the DFW area, I found that Braum's had the best taste, close to the original Schepps. Their butter is also very good, taste like Land O Lakes and much cheaper.
