Ex-Dallas Observer restaurant critic launches online dining guide
Hope to have it going in early October.
DALLAS Dave Faries, who left his post as restaurant critic for the Dallas Observer in February, has resurfaced with an online venture.
Called Critic's Guide, it'll cover Dallas-Fort Worth restaurants.
From the media kit:
Critic's Guide will feature four professional restaurant reviews each week, as well as stories about local chefs, "hidden gem" diners, cocktail culture, dining trends and more. In addition, visitors to the online magazine will find a searchable guide to recommended establishments and a useful events calendar. But the unique value of Critic's Guide is in the expertise of its writers, including Dave Faries and Mark Stuertz.
Mark Stuertz, you may recall, was dining critic at the Observer before Dave. So that makes not-one-but-two former Dallas Observer critics. Hey what about Dana Harris? She was a fabulous critic for the Observer before Stuertz, maybe she can contribute some reviews, too.
In a phone conversation, Faries hinted there might be more writers contributing reviews but didn't name names.
However, the media kit -- sent out to restaurateurs soliciting advertising -- includes not only his bio and Stuertz' but also two more names:
"- Steve Doyle is a popular contributing writer to the Dallas Observer’s food blog.
- Brad Cameron contributes to the DFW area’s leading vegetarian blog, Dallas Vegan."
Faries said that the site would do reviews only. "We're not doing news -- just restaurant criticism and commentary," he said.
They anticipate 300,000 to 500,000 pageviews per month, with the following proviso:
"We will not deliberately boost pageview numbers by promoting our articles to Digg or other national aggregate sites. Our numbers will largely reflect relevant local consumers."
The site's not up and running yet but is forecast to launch in early October.
