Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center will release at least five principals

The school is being restructured so that seven principals are whittled down to two. All existing principals are eligible to reapply for the new positions.

— On Tuesday, Dallas ISD superintendent Michael Hinojosa announced that the magnet school Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center will decrease its seven principals to just two. Formerly a magnet school with six principals and an executive principal, the restructuring will create two schools, effective fall 2011: a lumped-together humanities school and lumped-together arts and science school. There will be three magnet schools under each school, but just one principal per school.

The change, not surprisingly, was made so that the school can reduce costs and meet federal requirements.

"The funds that this will free up will allow us to keep more teachers at this outstanding campus," Hinojosa said in a statement.

The magnets at the school are: gifted and talented; science and engineering; business and management; health professions; education and social services; and public service: government, law, and law enforcement. The current seven principals (six magnet principals and an executive principal) will get to apply first for the two remaining positions.

"We would prefer not to have to make any changes but, given the current scenarios coming from the Texas Legislature and federal comparability requirements, we have little choice," the superintendent said in a statement. "We think we have put forward a solution that parents, teachers and students will appreciate in the long run. Make no mistake; however, we will still need help from the Texas Legislature to maintain the current services provided by our schools to students throughout the district."

This is crazy as a Townview alum and future engineer I feel that the structure of the school is what makes it so efficient and effective. I would not have it any other way. Favoritism will be shown to a niche school such as health professions or TAG and I am afraid some students will get left out. This restructure with only two principals Iam afraid will not produce the same positive results to allow some of the Townview schools like TAG and Science and Engineering be Blue Ribbon Schools.

Parents aren't pleased. Read a letter on Unfair Park from some parents urging the district to reconsider.
