Velvet Taco opens on Henderson with more buzz than the usual taqueria

Where is the love for the new Tacos El Guero in Lakewood?

— It's not like taquerias don't open all the time. You see a Fuzzy's opening practically every week, not to mention Mexican-owned taquerias like the Tacos El Guero which recently opened on Gaston Avenue in Lakewood, unobserved by local media.

But Velvet Taco in the old Church's Chicken spot on Henderson -- which won't open until this weekend -- has already been blessed with an onslaught of attention. To wit:

A taco is a taco is a taco, so what is it about this taco joint that has so captured the imagination of the local press?

1. Great location. It's right off off 75, and it's on Henderson, making it part of the hottest restaurant nexus in Dallas.

2. Long hours. Late on weeknights, 24 hours on weekends.

3. Intriguing menu twists. It has the kind of fusion-y ingredients that make it irresistible to write about. Someone quoted co-owner Mark Brezinski as saying that the tacos will come in Asian and Indian varieties such as calamari with habanero pineapple salsa or paneer with roasted tomato chutney.

4. Rich white guys own it. The restaurant comes from Plan B and Front Burner, the people who own Twin Peaks, with longtime restaurateur Mark Brezinski consulting.

So you know it'll be good.

You forgot to mention they didn't have to leave their own whitey neighborhoods to report on it.

My dad always said that once white people "discover" something from another culture, it's all over...."calamari tacos"...really?? I'll stick to buying my tacos in neighborhoods where these guys would never venture.

I'm kind of glad the new Taco El Guero is opening to little hype. The original on Carroll doesn't get a ton either, and it does just fine. Besides, "The Velvet Taco" is probably supposed to sound witty, but it just sounds like something that would make a 12-year-old giggle.

craveDFW went to the pre-opening madness at Velvet Taco and found them different but very good. The fried oyster taco was my favorite, along with the house-made corn tortilla. Yes, the menu is different than Guero, but I know where to find Guero. And yes, we report on Guero with certain frequency.

The fact that these tacos are not all that expensive (for the ingredients used and the amount of food given) and the very late night hours (24 hrs on weekend) I think it will be a popular choice.

Here is CraveDFW's report on the tacos at Velvet Taco, they look great. He also has the menu:

According to an employee, the place is doing a soft opening for a couple of weeks, dinner hours only. They'll add lunch in a couple of weeks, then add breakfast in September. And no late-night hours: For now, they'll be open until 11 p.m.
