Randalls and Tom Thumb recall ground turkey product
Part of Cargill recall, one of the largest meat recalls ever.
Today's Tainted Meat Recall Alert comes from Cargill, which recalled 36 million pounds of ground turkey after a salmonella outbreak sickened 76 people and killed one.
In response, Randalls and Tom Thumb stores are doing their own recall, which they emphasize is voluntary. Gotta love the whole approach to their terminology here:
Randalls and Tom Thumb stores have been notified by Cargill Value Added Meats, a division of Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, that it is voluntarily recalling 36 million pounds of ground turkey due to possible salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, Randalls and Tom Thumb are participating in the recall by voluntarily recalling the following product:
Product: Safeway Fresh Ground Turkey with Natural Flavorings - 15% Fat
UPC CODE: 0 21130 15448
Description: 20-ounce package. Product is packaged on white foam tray.
Dates and Codes: Use or Freeze By dates of 03/12/11 through 04/30/11
See, they don't HAVE to recall the meat, they could keep selling it to us, but they're just being extra-special-careful on the off chance that we MIGHT get salmonella from this POSSIBLY-tainted meat. Really, they're doing us a giant favor.
More release talk:
We are asking customers to check their freezers for the recalled product. Customers who purchased this product are asked to discard it or return it for a full refund. Product sold on or after May 1, 2011 is NOT subject to this recall.
So this is pretty old meat.
CBS says that the recall includes fresh and frozen ground turkey products produced at Cargill's Springdale, Ark., plant from February 20 through August 2, and that Texas has reported nine victims so far. And that it's been going on for months:
"Illnesses have occurred every month since early March, with spikes in May and early June although some cases may not have been reported yet. The CDC said the strain is resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics, which makes treatment more difficult."
That CBS link has a list of all the products that were recalled, from fresh to frozen, chubs to patties. If you want more information about this recall, hit Cargill at 1-888-812-1646 or 1-800-Safeway.
