Kids and family events in Dallas-Fort Worth, August 11-17

10-minute plays, playhouses, and dinosaurs on television are your best bets this week.

This is truly the last week of summer freedom for most children, as school gets back in session on August 22. But there's no use being sad (or if you're a parent, happy) about it -- use the following events to make your last days of freedom as enjoyable as possible.

TeCo Theatrical Productions is putting the spotlight on six area teenagers with their Teen 10-Minute Play Competition at Bishop Arts Theater Center in Dallas, playing now through Saturday. Each playwright will present a short play in hopes of winning the $500 grand prize, which is voted on by audiences. With titles like The Bad Friends, Romeo and Juliet (With a Twist), and One Crazy Tamale, choosing your favorite may be tough.

Every kid needs a special play area, and with the annual Parade of Playhouses at NorthPark Center in Dallas, you may be able to win your young one something that will make all their friends jealous. 19 different playhouses are on display now through August 21, with $5 raffle tickets (or 5 for $20) being sold for the event-ending raffle. You can also enter the raffle online, which benefits Dallas CASA.

Finally, if you can't wait for the premiere of Terra Nova on Fox this fall, you can get a sneak peek at so-called "dino-drama" with Journey to Terra Nova at the Museum of Nature & Science in Dallas next Tuesday and Wednesday. The event will feature a bus where you can put yourself in the world of Terra Nova via green screen, see clips from the show, and enter to win a trip to Australia.
