Coffeehouse review: The Pearl Cup in Dallas
Linger with your latte ... they won't bite.
We’re all guilty of it. Around here, we get in the habit of moving pretty quickly, whether you’re tapping anxiously while waiting for your G&T at the bar or zipping through the construction on LBJ Freeway. But luckily, with its concept of “café society,” Dallas’ third-generation espresso bar The Pearl Cup is doing its best to give us reason to slow down.
It shouldn’t be such a novel concept. With little in common but their mutual love of seriously good java, horn-rimmed design geeks, suit-and-tie commuters, and seminary students all gather at communal tables for hours at a time. Why not get it and go? Regulars will tell you there are two things that keep them coming back: the friendly baristas, and the so-delicious-you-might-dream-about-it Pearl Latte.
If you’re wondering what’s so darn special about espresso and steamed milk, it’s all about those few extra minutes: the ultra-secret sweet milk recipe (even employees couldn’t trade their firstborn for it) and, most importantly, the “latte art,” which you’ll witness firsthand as your barista proudly serves your drink. But this is about more than good coffee. GM Mattie Stafford points out that The Pearl Cup places a strong emphasis on all things local (from the beans to the baked goods) as well as being environmental stewards. The soy-based insulation in the ceiling, the exposed brick on the walls, and the reclaimed steel tables throughout the place may go unnoticed if you’re in a hurry, but they’re small touches that make a big difference.
Yet another small touch? You may pop in to read some Rumi and munch on biscotti, and then leave with a budding knowledge of espresso (they serve three kinds here!) and a new BFF in the do-ragged chap who poured your Iced Toddy. So while you’re there, sip slowly and kick up your feet — you don’t need to be running off anytime soon.

unlisted, humbleness is a word according to a few dictionaries, but I agree that humility is better.
