Trader Joe’s eyes Knox-Henderson for Dallas location
Also: Walnut Hill & 75, and one in Fort Worth.
California chain Trader Joe's made local gourmet food shoppers happy with its announcement in May that it's coming to Dallas, but the company has been elusive about identifying specific locations.
The inevitable response has been speculation and wishful thinking about where Trader Joe's might land. However, we persuaded parties involved with the process to share what they knew, which they agreed to do as long as their identities weren't revealed.
So far, three locations have been ear-marked. According to more than one source, leases have been signed on at least one of these spots:
1. Walnut Hill and Central at the northwest corner: This is the corner where a $300 million development was going to be built until the real estate market took a dive. It's currently a large open field. This location was described as a "done deal."
2. Knox Street: This is the newest spot that's emerged as a choice by TJ's, with more than one person saying it's happening. However, conversation about this location is circumspect, since the address still has a business on site whose lease is almost up.
3. Fort Worth: "A deal has definitely been signed," said one spy, and it's going in "somewhere on Camp Bowie."
In May, Trader Joe's confirmed that the first store in Dallas would open within the year, and that it was considering both inside the city limits and in the suburbs.
These locations do not include the former Whole Foods store on Greenville Avenue, an address popularly speculated on as a candidate. "That is definitely not happening," said one source.
They also do not include Lake Highlands, which tried to launch a "We want Trader Joe's" campaign, reminiscent of the '90s when urban neighborhoods would lobby for a Starbucks.
Trader Joe's is expanding throughout the southeast. A store is opening in Louisville, Ky., a mere 730 miles from Dallas, just up I-30 to I-40 through Little Rock; contractors there say that Trader Joe's has it in "rush mode" to get it open by October. Meanwhile, construction began two weeks ago on a store in Arlington, Va., and another is slated for Knox, Tenn.
Trader Joe's currently has more than 360 stores in 28 states.

I don't think they can build a store from the ground up if they plan to open by the end of the year.

Hey, I met two TJ managers over the weekend. I was told that they are looking at Plano. They want to be close to Central Market.
I am not to sure about the Fort Worth locations but I do know there are plans to open up Trader Joe's in Austin, San Antonio and Houston.

Hmm, is that old 7-11 corner big enough...maybe it's Lamps Plus that is leaving and they'll take that whole corner??? Shame though, not nearly enough parking in that corridor to support that kind of business, everyone's packed in like sardines as it is! The Greenville WF's location would have been perfect!

They should be comin to Frisco or Plano. That's where you'll find more Californians, and we're the ones that'll shop there.
TLS, Trader Joe's is a completely different store from Central Market.

Oak Cliff - Downtown Dallas-Uptown would be the prefect locales - more density, more urban, young vibe. These are the coolest areas in the Dallas area. And the old WF on Greenville would be an excellent spot As to Frisco / Plano - too suburban. Never have understood IKEA's location here and in Austin - so far from their prime markets Oh well - I'm not a developer

Wonder where it'll land on Camp Bowie - there are some new developments between Hulen and Alta Mere and the only other grocer on that particular strip of Camp Bowie is Tom Thumb.

TJ would be great in Uptown/ Knox Henderson Area/ SMU, however we already have 3 Whole Foods, Central Market, a new Market Place going in on lowest Greenville, an organic grocier, SunFlower right on Henderson, another one in Casa Linda, and then the regular mid-prized grociers, plus a new Walmart/Sams/JCPenny on Skillman, opening near all the new stuff on Park Lane. Remember how we hate traffic people; think of the traffic! What about closer to the Downtown /I-35, near the AAC and the West End, for all the hip Urban dwellers?

TLS, i'll probably eventually do a story on the topic of TJ's vs Central Market as the list is long but it involves both price and attitude. Central Market gouges like crazy. random example product: Bubbie's Mochi Ice Cream. CM charges $7.99 while TJ's and Asian markets charge $4 or less. CM has a "my way or the highway" culture so i think it's going to be fun to see them get real competition
Food*Sparks, could not agree more, was really hoping that WF would become a TJ's. i miss the WF there and never go to the one in Lakewood; i know they try to say it's nearby but to me it's a world away

@kasey - I know they are completely different stores that is why I asked about the CM hate. I've lived on the west coast so I have shopped at TJs countless times.
I do understand the criticism on CM's pricing. I already shop at 3 grocery stores on a weekly basis because there is no perfect store. I'll just have to add TJ as a 4th stop!

While I agree with Teresa in general, there are actually examples of CM being cheaper than even Walmart. For example, my wife and I make sure to buy a certain baby food there because regular grocery stores charge at least a dollar more for it.

San Rafael TJ's & Marin Farmers' Mkt were my only regular stops once upon a time in Cali. Anticipating TJs here. Btw, I believe even Southern Marin folks would be offended by Central Mkt. for soo many reasons.

ConnieL: I know where they are building the Fort Worth one, because they took over the building that was just sitting there. Actually there are three spots that they can have: Las Vegas Trail and the old Albertson's building on Camp Bowie. The one Las Vegas Trail is being renovated as we speak. Also, where Spring Creek BBQ on Camp Bowie is there is a store around the corner that has lot of cars in front of it. Lot of activity being in the last 2 months. These are all on the westside of Fort Worth.

Wish they would come to Murphy. We'll have an empty store bldg soon since nazi wally world is coming in to make a SUPER store (currently have a walmart neighborhood market that they JUST remodeled, which will surely become an empty building after SW is built).

Just curious why TJ's is so hyped up? I know it's cheaper, but what about the quality? I personally feel unsure about their product as there's little transparency of the source. Just my thoughts.

@Connie_Spears: Really, you think it'll be as far west on Camp Bowie as Spring Creek BBQ? That area seems a little removed. I was thinking east of there, near the Tom Thumb and new Fuzzy's. Lots of activity around that area.

In Addison, off of the tollway and beltline....where the Bed Bath and Beyond store used to be...would be a good location....
It has the hip people living in Addison, it is short enough distance for Plano folks to drive to, short enough distance for uptown folks to drive...Over 150,000 people pass through Addison every day for work, restaurant, bars, etc...so, lot of foot traffic... And, Addison is developing the whole Vitruvian Park and Addison Circle areas into mutli use neighborhoods, and getting Dart rail to accomodate folks...so, up and coming place.

Yes I've also heard that the emtpy Kroger at Park and Preston in Plano was going to get a TJ's. It's right across the street from Tom Thumb on one corner...Central market is directly across the street and then Market Street is just a block away on Park. LOTS of competition, that for some reason, Kroger couldn't compete with. Additionally Aldi's was also ineterested in that space...so it will be one or the other...but I really hope it's TJ's!!

Trader Joe's is overrated. I can't believe you CM haters. I haven't been in a long time and I went yesterday. The produce was the best I've bought this summer, the meat (and the guys behind the counter) was superb, the fresh bread was great--still warm and reasonably priced.

When I lived in California there were three TraderJoe's within 15 minutes of my house and I could stop in almost every day if I needed something. Too bad TJ's is only looking at typical Dallas locations, like Knox-Henderson and Plano. What about the rest of us? Just once I'd love to see something new in Rockwall.

Anything at the old Kroger at Park/Preston isn't going to happen unless they tear down the building and rebuild. It isn't suitable for any new business.

Because CM is an HEB store some things there are a good bit cheaper than Kroger: half and half, flour, yeast, some produce and meat/seafood, believe it or not...just to name a few. If you shop carefully (seasonal fresh items and sale items, and get to know prices on the items you buy often for yourself), you can do just fine at CM. Plus shopping at other stores doesn't inspire the home chef in me like CM does! That said, I would happily ALSO shop at Trader Joe's for certain items. I thought they should be looking at the Borders on Lovres in combination with the empty bike shop next door. If they really want to compete with CM, that's be the place to do it--right across the street.

Trader Joe's would have been great in the old Elliot's location on Maple at Medical District... lots of low-to-middle incomers in the immediate (and walkable) area, great transit access, and easy highway access. Kroger's fine, but TJ's would have been perfect.

LOL where are all of y'all "hearing" about all of these locations? I highly doubt that there are this many reputable info sources giving this many different locations.
Oak Cliff would be an EXCELLENT CHOICE!!! As a Cliff-Dweller I can tell you we need something like TJ's there.

Trader Joe's would be smart to locate in North Dallas, south of LBJ, because it has so many great KOSHER products. Many Kosher-keepers go to Trader Joe's when they visit Baltimore, San Diego, and other cities and bring stuff back. This neighborhood's residents also have good disposable $$. Walnut Hill and Central is a mixed bag. You have the Glen Lakes gated community nearby with some of Dallas's wealthiest residents, but a less-than-desirable clientele on the other side of Central, as well as the residents of those cheap apartments on the west side of Central/Meadow.

I don't like CM because even though they have fantastic produce, it's a pain and a waste of time to have to weigh it and label it myself. Also, they feel like they're really doing you a favor if you need a carryout to your car (I have a bad back), and you have to wait and wait for them to find someone to do it.

Camp Bowie would work, Southlake would be ok, the Heritage Trace area of Keller is a brand new area that could use someplace just like this. Garland, Rockwall, Rowlett, Sachse, Wylie would be fantastic! Murphy already has Sprout's, which I also like, but there's no comparison to Trader Joe's. I'm originally from So. Cali, but been here for years. When I fly back to visit family, I always go to TJ's to shop and then either bring the stuff back home in an empty suitcase or I ship the stuff to Texas. If they come out to any of those cities I just listed, I'd love to work there as my second job...

Hey, just 'cause you scampered here from Cali or you wear hipster glasses and are under 30 doesn't mean you got a lock on wanting to go to TJs. And PS: the reason stores go to the suburbs relates to size (yes it matters), traffic and parking. That's just an unfortunate side-effect of urbanism. At least you don't have to bride & tunnel it to Jersey. Am I right?
