State Fair of Texas Fried Foods Awards, the 2011 list
FRIED BUBBLEGUM! Well, bubblegum marshmallows. But still.
It's Christmas Day for fried food fans, the day The State Fair of Texas announces its annual "Big Tex" Choice Awards for the best fried foods.
This is the Seventh Annual Big Tex Choice Awards hosted by the 2011 State Fair of Texas wherein food vendors vie for two key prizes: "Best Taste" and "Most Creative."
Last year's winners were Fried Beer for most creative and Texas Fried FRITOS Pie for Best Taste.
The first round of contestants submitted recipes in August. Judges narrowed the field down to eight. On Labor Day, those eight contestants will present their creations to a panel of four judges, who will pick the final two winners.
Finalists named for Big Tex® Choice Awards:
- Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack
- Deep Fried Pineapple Upside Down Cake
- Deep Fried Texas Salsa™
- El Bananarito
- Fried Autumn Pie
- Fried Bubblegum
- Hans' Kraut Ball
- Walking Taco
And now, the mouth-watering descriptions:
Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack - A buffalo chicken strip is coated in flapjack batter, rolled in jalapeno bread crumbs, deep fried to a golden brown, skewed, and served with a side of syrup. Crowd pleasing appetizer or a meal in itself!
Deep Fried Pineapple Upside Down Cake - Fresh and sweet pineapple rings are delicately dipped in cake batter, fried, and coated with a caramel, sugar, and cinnamon glaze. What tropical treat is complete without a cherry on top?
Deep Fried Texas Salsa™ - This spicy medley of jalapenos, roasted garlic, onion, tomato, and pepper is rolled together, dipped in masa, and covered in crunchy tortilla chips. Into the fryer and served with warm, deliciously creamy queso.
El Bananarito - In case you are wondering, it’s a deep fried banana rolled in a flour tortilla, topped with whipped cream, powdered sugar, a dusting of cinnamon, and a touch of vanilla extract. Top it off with your choice of smooth, hot caramel or decadent chocolate syrup. Concessionaire contact: Lydia Turner at the Funnel Cake stand on Fun Way near the intersection of Pike and Fun Way and in the Tower Building.
Fried Autumn Pie - Fairgoers will fall for this hard-to-resist puff pastry infused with a scrumptious combination of pumpkin, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and fall spices. Deep fried and rolled in ginger, cinnamon, and sugar.
Fried Bubblegum - You’ll swear it’s bubblegum! A light as a feather bubble gum flavored marshmallow is dipped in batter and lightly fried to perfection. Decorated with a swirl of icing. A final sprinkling of powdered sugar completes this treat! It will blow you away!
Hans’ Kraut Ball - A conglomeration of taste: browned pork sausage, onion, garlic, a zing of sauerkraut, mustard, and tasty seasonings all rolled into a mouth-watering ball of delight. Covered with seasoned bread crumbs, deep fried, and served with your choice Spicy Mustard, Rasberry Chipotle, or Ranch.
Walking Taco - Stroll down the Midway with this concoction of seasoned hamburger meat, lettuce, onion, fresh tomato, grated cheese, sour cream, and tasty salsa. Inventively served up in a Nacho Cheese flavored Doritos bag!

Dave Faries suggested fried gum two years ago: http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/cityo...
The kraut ball sounds good. I just wished they left the name as kraut ball and not Hans' kraut ball because that suggests a different ball.

I'm leaning toward the buffalo chicken in a flapjack. (In terms of something that I might actually enjoy eating.)

I'm guessing once people understand what it actually is, Fried Bubblegum will be the runaway best-seller, with Fried Salsa right behind.

Moving past the name shock, the fried bubble gum description sounds pretty tasty. TLS's comment will stay with me on Han's Kraut Ball. I won't be able to order it without giggling -- great first comment in on this one.

No fried vegetables ??? Broccoli, asparagus or cauliflower, dipped in batter and served w/ a ranch style dressing or a vinaigrette sauce...unique, delicious and healthy (relatively)

I, too, am shocked—absolutely shocked—that there are no fried vegetables on this list.

People are morbidly obese because they eat this stuff during the State Fair. They are morbidly obese because they eat like that the rest of the year as they sit on the sofa and watch TV or play video games.

Only 29 days til the State Fair of Texas is open! I can't wait. What would be the point of fried veggies? There have already been fried green beans and that didn't go anywhere. Bring on the tasty and inventive fried foods...it is a once a year indulgence- if it sounded remotely healthy (which it wouldn't be) then people would eat it year round...attributing to the obesity problem!

WOW! I LOVE THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS!!!! Almost every one of these entries sound yummy to me. In order not to be stuffed when one leaves, one must go to the Fair multiple times. Preferably 5-7 times. The route through the Fair is ALL about food selection. In years past, the coupons don't expire from one year to the next. So! If you don't use 'em all this year, save 'em for next year!

I cant wait! I'll probably try everything on the list except the Autumn Pie. The fried salsa sounds the best. I eat so healthy and work out almost daily so The State Fair foods are such a wonderful treat! I love to splurge on Fair Day - so glad it's a free country and we dont have to stop selling/eating these items because some people can't handle putting down the fork therefor causing others to say these food items should be banned...insanity

Hans must of got his idea from the famous Sausage Sauerkraut Balls from Wunsche Brothers in Spring. These balls have been on the menu for decades, and they are delicious. Wunsche Brothers deserve the credit for this recipe.

Are these vendor stands required to be equipped with automatic defibrillators? Also, want to recommend a new State Fair game, we could call it "Hoggin' for Fatties" - premise is for a certain amount of tickets you get issued a paint ball gun which has 100 paint balls in the cartridge. You are then escorted to the top of a platform and allowed to spray your gun at will at all of the obese pigs walking around the midway stuffing their faces with this cr@p!! People who are fat and slow will get to wear paint the rest of the day. Those of us who are thin and quick will be able to run away and watch the porkers get popped!! :D

Last year your review said the Fried Frito Pie was a generous portion of ... meaty, crunchy, salty, cheesy, oozing goodness. I couldn’t wait to try it. The portion was 5 little pieces of dried out Frito “balls”. We were very disappointed in this very high priced concoction. I hope your review of these new items are more accurate. The fried salsa sounds wonderful.

Sarah Blaskovich, staff:
KeepOurFreedoms, I think the review you're referring to is the State Fair of Texas' official explanation of what Fried Frito Pie was. (See it here and here.) I do want to note that this is not our review; it's the wording that the State Fair used to describe the food. We did not mean for you to think it was our interpretation or opinion of the food.
That said, I personally tried the Fried Frito Pie and thought it was delicious. To your point, I wouldn't call it a "generous portion," but I did find it tasty.

These were great and fun! I would have to say my favorite are the fried oreos and snickers, I love them every time. I haven't found anything I've liked better yet.
Here are some fun pics I took of people while I was at the fair recently:
