Kids and family events in Dallas-Fort Worth, January 13-19

Rodeo, ballet, and Martin Luther King, Jr. celebrations top this week's kids and family events.

When compiling my weekly kids and family events roundup, I try to find some sort of theme to tie the events together. So what do this week's events have in common? Not a gosh darned thing. But what's better than having a variety of options from which to choose?

First up is the 2011 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, which starts Friday at Will Rogers Memorial Center. Horses, pigeons, and goats (oh my!) will be on display, along with all the cattle you'd ever want to see in your entire life. The World's Original Indoor Rodeo doesn't start until next week, but there are still plenty of activities to hold your attention.

You may think you know the story of Snow White, but you've probably never seen it performed by ballerinas, which is precisely what Plano Metropolitan Ballet will do the next two weekends at Courtyard Theatre of Plano. You're kidding yourself if you think you don't want to see how they'll handle the seven dwarves.

Finally, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is next Monday, and several cities are honoring the civil rights pioneer with parades on Saturday. Carrollton will start their 14th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade at Carrollton City Hall, Dallas will hold an MLK Birthday Celebration March/Parade at Dallas City Hall, and the 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and March will be held at Patty Granville Arts Center in Garland. Each of the events will start at 10 a.m. Garland will also host a MLK Youth Extravaganza on Sunday.

Know of any kids and family events we should have mentioned? Tell us about them in the comments section below.
