Arlington billboard targets “johns” at Super Bowl
A little public humiliation, “To Catch a Pervert” style.
A new billboard in Arlington uses the threat of public humiliation to help ward of prostitution during the upcoming Super Bowl. The large billboard above I-30 at Collins Street shows mug shots of four men convicted of trying to buy sex in Arlington with the words, “Dear John, You Never Know! This Could Be You.” next to a police patrol car. The not-so-friendly reminder lets would-be johns know that everyone knows what you’re doing, including the cops, and if you try your pervy ways in A-town, you could get a billboard for your troubles.
Police in Arlington and Grapevine have already set up stings using online web sites (cough, Craigslist) and have made prostitution arrests at local hotels. It’s not just the johns, ladies, that get busted. But there are a number of organizations interested in protecting women involved in sex trafficking and prostitution, including an alarming number of juvenile girls. According to the Dallas Morning News, they will also be monitoring online sex ads (and billboards are also supposed to be going up soon) and the Dallas Women's Foundation plans to release a report estimating the number of North Texas girls involved in sex trafficking before the Super Bowl.
WFAA reports that, “Arlington police are not only setting up stings, they’re calling adult services and leaving reminders that preventing prostitution will be a priority during Super Bowl week.” A little public humiliation, “To Catch a Pervert” style. Oh, snap!
