Most unsafe place in America for auto theft is on West Commerce Street in Dallas

Hope you're not headed to the Dallas County criminal courts anytime soon.

— CBS reported this week that West Commerce Street in Dallas is the worst location in the entire U.S. for auto theft. Drivers have a one in four chance of getting their car stolen. One in four!

The data comes from the Neighborhood Scout Report. Guess what's just at the corner of W. Commerce Street and Riverfront Boulevard? The Dallas County Criminal Courts. Nearby is the Dallas County Jail.

Other stats from W. Commerce Street show:

  • There are 113 crimes per 1,000 residents, only 5% safer than other neighborhoods in the U.S.

  • You've got a 1 in 82 chance of being victim to a violent crime. Chances are 1 in 112 for Dallas and 1 in 197 for the state.

  • Even higher, you've got a 1 in 10 chance of being victim to a property crime. Chances are 1 in 16 for Dallas and 1 in 25 for Texas.

I think those are skewed statistics and something with the parking garages there and towing companies that enforce overnight parking there. Most people will call at first saying thier car was stolen, when in fact it was towed, so the police blotter/stats will show lots of thefts when they are really just towed away.

are you an idiot? The tow companies have to report to the police if they tow a vehicle and auto theft is assigned a detective that will drop the case if it did get towed or is changed to not stolen... research facts before you make statements.

Unrelated but perhaps still interesting, The Advocate says that car thefts are a problem in Bishop Arts District right now. I don't believe they relate to the scale of the story above.

On the other side of the bridge, the hood is still a dangerous place...It hasn't been graced with the hipster invasion or better block initiatives. It was traditionally a part of Dallas where you found migrant farm worker families who would live there for 6-8 months and then head to the valley for picking crops. On the streets just behind Smoke and the hotel you will find some of the poorest homes in Dallas. It is a disparity that goes unnoticed by those noshing on their $$$$ BBQ.
