Kids and family events in Dallas-Fort Worth, May 12-18

Great weather + festivals galore = fun for all families this weekend.

With the temperatures this weekend predicted to be in the low 80s, there's absolutely no reason for you not to get out of the house and enjoy the great outdoors. With that in mind, you will not find one event below that takes place inside. Get up off the couch, get out of the house, and have some fun!

Sick of taking your dog just around the block? On Saturday there will be a Pop-Up Pooch Park (try saying that three times fast) at the corner of Polk Street and Turner Avenue in Dallas. Dogs will be free to run around sans leashes to their heart's content.

Trinity River Wind Festival

Trinity River Wind Festival

Another new experience is waiting for you at Trammel Crow Park in Dallas on Saturday courtesy of the first-ever Trinity River Wind Festival. Taking advantage of the wide-open spaces, a menagerie of kites and wind-driven toys will take to the skies. Festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own kites and act like the kids they are -- or wish they could be.

More kites will be on display at the 2011 Dragon Boat, Kite, and Lantern Festival at Lake Carolyn in Irving on Sunday. As the name implies, the festival will celebrate Asian culture with dragon boat races, kite flying, and lanterns, plus food, arts and crafts, and other activities. Plus it's free!

Finally, Modern Family Fest, taking place on Sunday at Folsom Fitness Center Park in Dallas, is not, to my disappointment, a celebration of great ABC sitcom. Instead, it's a charitable event that will benefit Friends of Wednesday's Child, which brings hope and healing to North Texas foster children. There will be a variety of your typical festival activities, along with food and entertainment.

Know of any kids and family events we should have mentioned? Tell us about them in the comments!
